Our low-end FL washer just died suddenly, and the repair will cost close to 1/2 it's orig. value. So, I'm FL shopping again. IDK if 3.7 cu ft. will be big enough, but I do know my old one didn't fit our queen comforter. Plus, the DSs are only getting bigger, so I might as well try to get something that does more, faster.
Do any of you use a sanitize cycle (any brand) and call it good? Is that a big risk w/ pockets? Does the pre-wash work as the initial cycle if you have hard water/toddler pee/etc., or do you have to do a real, full cycle in order to rinse enough? What about a steam cycle? |

Nope. I live in a very dry place, and conserve water as much as possible. |

I have an LG FL and very hard water. My model doesn't have a sanitize cycle (although sometimes I wish it did) and it took me a little while to figure out a good wash routine, but it's working great for us now! I don't know the exact capacity of mine, but it does fit our queen-sized comforter pretty well.
I don't know firsthand how the Samsung works on diapers, but back when I was researching FLs I noticed it got GREAT reviews from all the consumer report-style websites. |

I have a maytag epic front loader that's about four years old. It has a sanitize cycle and I only use it to sanitize kitchen rags and to prep prefolds. If I used only flats/prefolds I wouldn't have a problem using it on diapers but I feel the water temp is too hot for anything with elastic or pul. If I stop the cycle in the middle and open the door the laundry in there is way too hot to touch. Our water heater is set at 180ยบ and it heats the water past that. The sanitize cycle also doesn't use much water for some reason so I only use it when I'm able to run the auto soak at the same time. The entire cycle I have to run when I use the sanitize function, auto soak (30 minutes)-sanitize wash-cold rinse (only temp option)-second cold rinse, takes 2 hours and 40 minutes. I only use it when I'm going to bed or headed out of the house for a few hours. It does get the kitchen rags nice and clean with all the smells gone. I've never had a washer with a steam cycle but I always thought it was for steaming out wrinkles, but that could be totally off.

i use the sani cycle every 3rd or 4th wash on my stash of all pockets, ive been doing it a year plus with no issues. FWIW if i dont to sani i do whitest whites, the only difference being the very hot vs hot wash, and then somehow 30 more mins... i use the soak cycle as my pre wash and then run one express wash as my extra rinse after my wash

My neighbour has a Bosch. I know she uses the sanitize cycle for her diaper wash, which includes fitteds and PUL covers. She hasn't had any problems in 2+ years.
ETA: Sanitize cycle with extra rinse option, and that's it. No pre-rinse or pre-wash cycles. Everything gets clean. They have good water(very nice in home water treatment system) Edited by northwoods - 06 Dec 2011 at 2:56pm |

We have the large Samsung FL with the sanitize cycle. I don't use that cycle very often - I usually do a rinse with no spin to start and then a heavy duty cycle with pre-wash - but DH uses it quite often and it seems to work great. We have NO issues with diaper cleanliness, smells, stains, etc.

In our old house we used the Sanitary Cycle and bleach every wash for about four years. The only brands of pockets/covers that were effected were my Haute Pockets (PUL seperated), Happy Heiny's(velcro wore out), and thirsties and Weehugger velcro looked nasty but still worked. I've used Fuzzibunz(some elastic wore out but they were ancient), Bumgenious, Bummis, Blueberry, and fluffy's and have not had any issue with those.
In our new house I found the Sanitary cycle wasnt doing the best for us, but the Whitest of Whites cycle did better for some reason. Same diapers, same bleach, but sanitary doesnt cut it. :) |

New to the CDing world so FWIW we have this bad boy:
When researching machines we debated between a FL and top loader. We concluded that this machine give us all the bonus of a FL with the reliability of a top loader-it's still HE. It fits a king size comforter and the matching dryer is faster than the washer (imagine that!)
I used the sanitize cycle to prep unbleached Pfs. The sanitize cycle is approx 120 or 150 (brain is tired) degrees and if water boils at 212 and people boil their Pfs (and they survived) I felt like it was okay to use.
Since I have less than 1 weeks worth of experience I can just say I have not been brave enough to run AIOs and pockets through the sanitize cycle based on my reading (specifically Heather McNamara's book.)
Good luck and happy shopping! New applicances are always fun!

I have a Whirlpool duet and haven't had any problems so far with my ME diapers. I thought I might be able to use just whitest of whites r/t energy and stuff. I noticed that they buildup faster. Back to the sanitize setting. We do soak warm, prerince cold, sanitize with extra cold rince. No issues and should have left alone. Also kitchen cloth, family cloth and babies microfiber towels go on sanitize mode. We use RnG too if that matters r/t harsh hard water. Also, Lowes was the best place for us. You can get free delivery and such. Dryer is awesome too. I can get my queen size sheets, blankets, and comforters in with ease. Happy hunting!

I have an LG front loader that has sanitize and steam options. I've never used the steam, but I do use the sanitize cycle for the diapers most of the time. I do the sanitize cycle and add prewash, extra water, and extra rinse. I put bac-out in the prewash. We have been CDing for 8 months and have not had any problems with our PUL or elastic. I tried doing the bulky setting which uses more water but I didn't feel like it was getting as clean.
