Just noticed tonight that the documentary "Babies" is now on the Netflix instant download lineup.  We're just sitting down to watch it now so I don't know if it's any good or not, but I know it has been mentioned on here before and a lot of people were interested in seeing it back then.

I watched that when I was pregnant with DS...when that woman (I think it was the one from Mongolia) gave birth and then got up and dressed and rode home straddling a motorcycle I was just

I have that in my queue!  The kids want to watch it with me, so I'll be interested to hear if it's kid-appropriate.

Thanks for the heads-up!  I've been interested in that for a while, but never remember about it.

I didn't watch every minute of it.  I was doing dishes and refereeing kids, but what I did see was

nudity of course, nothing sexual in nature though- at least that I saw
in the beginning they showed a birth but I don't think it was graphic
they showed someone cleaning out the innards of an animal at some point, but my ds didn't seem to realize what they were doing, it didn't really show much
the worst thing for me was just the parts where they showed one sibling picking on the other because I think it gave my ds some new ideas of how to pick on his sister. Tongue

It wasn't the type of movie I would enjoy just sitting and watching start to finish, but it was nice to watch while doing other things.

I watched it and thought it was really fascinating... definitely a little slow at times, but fun for moms to watch (and DD loved watching the babies).

We watched it a few months ago right after ds2 was born.  My dh was freaked out by all the naked boobies  LOL.  I laughed at him.  My mil was a little disturbed by it too and kept trying to distract my kids or making embarrassed noises and I was thinking that my kids are still to young to even notice or care besides that it was completely appropriate just because in the culture that was shown that is what they did.

It was interesting but I agree it was a bit slow.

That's funny about your MIL.  I'm sure mine would probably be the same way.  She gets super embarrassed over any sort of nudity in movies.

My ds (4) didn't seem to notice the nudity at all.  He thinks boobs are just how babies eat and that's what they were mostly doing, so nothing real interesting to him.

My dd liked seeing all the babies too.  She probably watched more of it than ds did.

That is good to know about the boobies.    I don't think I will let Tyner watch it, because he seems to be in the overly-fascinated with the female body stage right now.  Sierra would probably be embarrassed by it, but it would be a little easier to talk her through it.  Besides, the girl says she wants to be a midwife someday (even though I'm not sure she even really knows what a MW does), so she better get used to seeing it, right?!

we loved that movie.  i thought it was SO interesting to contrast our baby-raising methods across cultures.  the funniest juxtaposition was when the nigerian baby poops on the mom's leg and the mom just wipes it off with a corn cob or something and goes about her business.  the next scene shows the american family vacuuming the baby.    we are very obsessed with cleanliness over here, i guess

We watched it with dd and she loved it! I guess it was last summer, so she was 5 1/2. I think the "nudity" is appropriate, that it's good to teach kids how different people live and that breasts are a natural and not shameful part of people's lives--especially kids that are old enough to understand about what babies eat. Thumbs%20Up

I liked the part where the baby in Mongolia was tied to the bed so he couldn't get in trouble, and yet he still managed to get the roll if toilet paper and make a mess. LOL

Saw this post yesterday and decided to rent it on the iPad last night via iTunes. I totally loved every second of it and laughed like crazy at the cultural differences. Thought it was extremely well done and tasteful despite the boobies DH thought some parts (that I let him watch) were cool too! I especially loved the Japanese baby getting so frustrated with her smart little toys, and the african baby never had those issues. I guess rocks aren't as complicated, lol! Super sweet film though, I'd recommend it to anyone!

My bro and sis in law just got back from a mission trip to India. He had to tell me all about how different parenting was right down to breastfeeding. No babies wear diapers. Pee and poop wherever. The children also play with animal poop like it's play doh. Seriously, bro has a pic of it. I bet hey have awesome immune systems!

Yeah this has been in my queue for a while now. I just haven't gotten around to it. My neighbor only made it through 4 minutes before she started crying. She says her hormones must still be wacky lol. It does look really neat though.

I watched it awhile back thought it was good really interesting. I thought the licking bath was interesting. Or how the baby was chewing on dirty rocks. We would freak if our babies did that.

It's funny, I would much rather my kids chew on a rock or eat dirt from our yard than a cart or high chair anywhere. I remember we were somewhere and DD was crawling on the ground outside... I was totally fine with that, but even touching the floor somewhere like WalMart makes my skin crawl. Blech!

My sweet DH came home from the grocery store today with "Babies" for me Open%20Smile He knew I really enjoyed it and wanted to see it again...buy 1 get 1 at Safeway; can't beat it! I'm watching it again as we speak (so as to avoid packing) and it's great! Highly recommend again to anyone who likes babies ;)

My inlaws are always telling my kids that things they are playing with are dirty and taking things away too.  I usually say "I don't care if they put that in their mouths.  I did growing up and I am one of the healthiest people I know."  Sometimes they will let it go and sometimes I give it back.  Other times I just tell my kids I don't care if they play with it but keep it away from them while the inlaws are in the room since it bothers them so much.  My kids put sticks and rocks in their mouths, eat food they drop on the ground, even on fast food restaurants floors (now this I think is kind of gross and I try to get them to leave stuff they drop on restaurants or movie theater floors but I don't freak out if they do put it in their mouth before I can stop them) and they are rarely sick and have never gotten sick from something"dirty" they played with outside.

We don't like poop and pee all over though LOL

We just watched this today.  My 2 y/o girl sat through the whole thing.  My 4 y/o boy crawled around but watched it mostly & my 8 y/o watched it & laughed his head off at parts, but complained that it wasn't as interesting as "Science of Babies" also found on netflix.  He liked learning about babies more than just watching them.    It was cute/interesting.  I'm just amazed that my kids watched it.

I watched this last week. The Mongolian baby was cracking me up. The Namibian babies were funny, too. It's funny how the 2 babies with the least amount of "specialized" baby products developed at the same rate or even faster. We think all this special junk we have is better...not that some of us didn't know anyway, but obviously it's a big fat gimmick! It was cool to actually *see* that though.

I loved it so much DH bought it for me! I put it on when I'm up late and DH is working at the fire station. It's so fun! And yes, Holly, ITA about all the baby gimmick crap we don't need. I loved that the sweet little Namibian cutie pie was walking around with a can on his head learning balance...who needs expensive gymnastics classes?!
