Here's a little picture tutorial about how to pin:

First, practice on a doll or teddy bearBig%20smile

Lay baby on diaper and fold bottom part in:

Next, bring it up over baby:

Now you may need to fan out the front depending on how big the diaper is, this is a preemie prefold and is a little snug on this baby doll if I tried to pin it without fanning the front out.

Next put your fingers between baby and diaper:

Then stick the pin through and you will feel the pressure from the pin coming through the dipe, go slowly and you can pin all the way through the fabric or not, I usually don't go all the way through b/c then the pin is touching him and can leave a pressure indention on his hips.  Then guide the pin back through and out the front.  Keeping your fingers back there will keep the pin from dragging across baby's skin, I have done that before-not good :(

Now do the other side (you may need to adjust the first side to tighten, pull tight because it will loosen once it's pinned and baby is moving around):

And voila!!

Thanks!  I really want to find the love for pins but just can't.  It almost seems like my pins aren't sharp enough.  I don't know what I'm doing wrong except maybe that I need to practice on a doll a little first.  I haven't had any luck on a wiggly baby.  You make it look so easy!

If you have flats that fit your baby, you might have an easier time pinning them.  PF's are all quilty, and sometimes the pins can get stuck in the quiltiness.  With flats, the pin just slides between the layers.

Definitely practice first- it helps a lot!  And yes, these pics do make it look easy because it's a doll that can't move-it's way harder on a baby that wiggles and kicks.  Just work with them, eventually they will catch on.  I started saying "Hold still, ouchie."  And he would look down see the pin and having been poked beforeEmbarrassed he knew what that meant and he would stop kicking and moving.

Now if only they would lay still like a cabage patch kid all the time.

I had a cabage patch kid just like that as a kid.  Does that ones head smell like baby powder?

Does putting your finger in there affect the fit--make it loose? Or should you be able to get a finger in there anyway so that it isn't too tight?

It should be tighter on your finger than you want it to be in the end. It is there to protect baby from the pin, so if you don't make it "too tight" it will get too loose.

You're welcome!  It's helpful to see pics of the pinning process, I kinda just learned as I went :P  Many poked fingers, heck I still poke  myself from time to time!  Ack!

Have fun with your new pins and PF's!!!

Great tute!  I'll add that I found it helped get the second side snug if after you pin the first side you grab the back corner of the second side and the leg of the first side and kind of pull them in opposite directions, if that makes sense.  Well, mainly just hold the leg, but really pull the dipe, it seems to make it nice and snug.

I don't see why you would need to use pins with the other options out there, like Snappis fitted dipes with snaps or or the Monkey Doodlez TAG covers, where it is not a pocket but the prefold or pad is held under end-pieces and closes like a disposable.... not trying to be rude but it seems like so much to pin and unpin every change if there is no need for it...

I'm a pinner. I HATE getting poop on covers, so trifolding and padfolding is out for us. I just think it's gross to have to spray out a diaper AND a cover. Pins keep everything super tight and contained. We tried snappis and gave them a really good long concerted effort, but they just never held for us. The diaper would always loosen up wayyy too much and poop would still end up on the cover. PINS ROCK! I can also let baby go coverless in a pinned flat or prefold, but not a snappi'd one.

Eventhough I can't pin to save my life (lol), I'm with Jess - you can't let a baby run around in a snappi'd PF or flat unless you want them to rip it off or end up snappi'd to the furniture. I so wish I could get pinning down so I could let DS run around outside in a pinned flat. I wouldn't have to worry about dirty grass stained 'nice' diapers and his bum could breathe in the heat!  And, it would also be so retro cool. haha

I pinned for many year until a few months ago. I was letting my 2 y/o run around in a pinned flat and she came up to me crying with a pin sticking her in the side! Ouch! She had actually ripped it open and it was poking her! So now I only snappi. I find if I really pull the side in before I snappi I can get a good tight fit. I much prefer to fasten my dipes because I really HATE poopy cover too.

There are lots of reasons to pin. A lot of people use flats and prefolds for a lot of different reasons. Cost, natural fibers, ease of laundering are a few. Snappis can be difficult to use and you can't go coverless with a snappi. I personally prefer a snappi but haven't really tried pins much. Been poked too many times. Pad folding isn't very good for poo containment and as one mama pointed out on another thread somewhere that pad folding makes little bums look like they have a 2x4 in the cover LOL.

Yes - this.

I don't pin all the time but it doesn't take anylonger to use pins than a snappi.  I tried coverless with a snappi and DS2 got stuck to the couch. LOL

I dislike snap fitteds too, don't get as good a fit.

I hate just laying in a cover and I did loos my snappi and only had pins for three days.  Wasn't as bad as i thought it would be.
