Background before the question: DS due 6/30
Current stash includes:
6 GroBabys + 8 extra shells/soakers 2 Flips + 6 inserts
3 Bumgenius 3.0 One Size
2 FuzziBunz One Size
2 Happy Heiny’s One Size
I've also ordered some infant size and regular size prefolds and covers.
After practicing on an unsuspecting teddy bear as well as washing and prepping all of the current stash, I get the feeling that I'm going to prefer prefolds & Flips- stuffing the pockets was annoying- and doing it with dirty diapers seems like it will be even more so. So my question is- if the prefolds with covers are just as easy as the Flips, are the prefolds as absorbent as the Flips? My spouse and I both work outside the home, so time, ease and ability to sleep while keeping lil Mr. happy are of the essence. Your feedback is most appreciated!

ARe you wanting to trifold the PF's or pin them on? I trifolded inside the Flip for awhile, but found that the PF would migrate and bunch down between his legs, which the Flip inserts do the same thing, very annoying. AND if they poop with the PF trifolded or with the Flip insert the poop gets EVERYWHERE, all over the inside of the cover, ewwww. I did try opening the PF just a little under his bum to make a little "poop pocket" and that worked okay, but not great.
So I would say if you are going to actually pin or Snappi the PF on then you should be good with that, but the PF won't be quite as absorbant then since it's just one layer instead of 3. Does that make sense?

I think- and I've only really started playing with the prefolds- we would be angel or bikini folding the prefolds, using a snappi and then a cover (Maybe a whisper wrap or a thirstie?). With the flip it would be the flip cover with the flip insert.

Oh, okay I gotcha now:) Well, FWIW I have the Thirsties Duo wraps and LOVE them!
And then as far as the Flip, just use them and see what you think, there are lots of mamas that have them and love them, so it's really just preference. Good luck!! :D

Awesome! I keep stalking Craigslist hoping that someone will have some they would like to part with for a good deal.
I'm so excited about CD'ing- but also a little overwhelmed because I want it to go well so badly! (I need to prove all the naysayers about CD's wrong!)

I tried a Flip on S at 4wks and about 9lbs. and it was still too big. Definite poo leakage on that one. A basic pf. should give you plenty of absorbency. My nb. went through an extreme heavy-wetting stage during his first 5 wks, but w/ the constant pooping, I had to change him all the time anyway.

We're going to wait until 10-11 lbs to use the Flips/One Size in hopes of giving all the diaps a fair shot. Music Mama- what kind of covers did you use with your PF's?

I used mostly Thirsties XS & some Duo covers. Plus, I made some wool ones (wraps & shorties).

I'm liking Thirsties XS and Thirsties Duo size 1 covers (over PFs) best for the NB stage. We also have Prowrap XS but they don't seem to fit as well. They are the last ones I reach for.

The Thirsties Duos are the only cover I've been successful trifolding a pf with. I would think a PF would have plenty of absorbancy for a newborn because you do change them so often like Chrstine said. I think you would have better poo containment pinning or snappi-ing the pf personally.
The OS diapers you have will probably be too big for your LO for a little while. Just so you know that you probably won't be able to count on having those in your stash for a little bit. It depends on the size of your LO.
![]() Congrats on your little one and welcome to the Pin! Don't hesitate to ask lots of questions!

Flips are large fitting One Sizes. I dont think a newborn wold fit it but I am sure that it will fit my DS until potty training. With that said, I really love the diaper with prefolds. I never bought it with the flip inserts, just the cover used with chineese prefolds. I trifold or pin/snappi it on. Depending on my mood. I have thisties duo wraps too and they are very comparable.
Pockets dipes have there place in my stash too. I pre stuff mine and like them for nightime and naps as well as there are super easy for grandmas, babystitters and dads to change so they are handy to have.
I am a newbie too! Dont stress, just trial and error and have fun. You are doing an amazing thing for your little one and family
