My little one (my 3rd) is 26 months old and has lots food allergies and eczema problems. I should have made the leap to CD sooner, but never felt like I could handle it. With him probably not being in diapers much longer and also (probably) being our last LO, what are your recommendations? Thanks in advance!

My first thought would maybe be Sandys by Mother-Ease. Lots of moms love them for PLing as well as diapering b/c they are side-snapping and you can pull them up and down. They are a workhorse diaper and very durable. You may be able to find some used to save some money. Even if you decide to buy new, you will probably be able to sell them pretty easily as they are a popular option. You can always round out your stash with some flats or PFs as they are fairly inexpensive and I am assuming you are not looking to make a big investment at this point. Large GMD flats are $15 a dozen I believe. Many moms use them padfolded in a cover, but the Nappy Lady shows many other folds you may want to try for fun. Welcome to the Pin!

I like Sandy's (by Mother Ease), Pre-folds and Flats.
I used Sandy's as diapers and as trainers. For potty training I would have the kids wear them with out a cover, so they were like really absorbent undies. When I wanted them to be water proof I would both a Mother Ease Air Flow cover over them. They are durable and easy to clean/wash because they are cotton. You could try the bamboo, I have both, but I like the fun colors in cotton
Mother Ease has their own For Sale or Trade (FSOT) forum on their web page or you might just look around other FSOT forums to see about picking some up at even a better price. One note... they are a full cut around the bottom and legs so some don't like the fit under regular pants. I never had a problem with the fit, but just wanted to let you know. Also for day time I didn't need to use doublers but if you use them over night you will need at least 2 of their doublers. I really like ME diapers, but I am not the biggest fan of their doublers. I think there are other options that are a bit better, especially for over night.PF's and Flats are easier than I thought they would be and would be the cheapest investment. The only reason I might not do them, is that you would probably need something different for potty learning time. It is nice to have something they can pull up and down for that period of time. But, Flats are super trim which is great for fitting under regular clothing.
Another thought is you could try PLing with him. For some reason I thought I was supposed to wait my LO's were closer to 3 to start, so with DD I waited until she was almost 3. With DS I figured why not try earlier and he was pretty much using the potty before he turned 2. The only reason I mention it, is that I started using cloth when DD was 2 and DS 6 months and no one suggested DD try PLing. Having 2 in cloth wasn't a big deal, but having only 1, was a lot nicer and it never occurred to me to even try with her.
I am sure more mama's will chime in with more ideas too

I'd also suggest Sandy's. We started my older guy at 26mo, and got a lot of use out of them. His more fitted pants/shorts may not work over the dipes though, so that's something to consider. Flats usually are trim enough to go under slimmer bottoms, as are some pocket-style dipes (I like Swaddlebees because they are very trim). Sweatpants and other knits are usually fine w/ any cloth dipe though.

Like others I would suggest Sandys or Clovers. Both are great diapers that also work well for PLing and overnight (with an extra doubler).
You may want a few trimmer fitting side snapping AIOs to use during the day under clothes like bottombumpers (they're also really convient for when you're out of the house). Sandy's and Clovers with a PUL cover over them probably won't fit under most of your jeans.
I would plan to get anywhere between 1/2 and 2/3 of my cloth investment back if I sold it all. You can look at prices of used diapers in the FSOT section here, or at SPOTS Corner on HyenaCart.com to get a good idea of what you can resell cloth diapers for. Or you can buy used (and still resell them when you're done).

Thank you so much everyone! I will do some more investigating today!
My little guy is thin but has a belly. His pants are constantly falling down, so a bigger diaper would probably make his clothes fit better. :) He is interested in the potty, but not ready yet. He loves to sit and pretend, but we haven't even had any accidental success. Also, with all his allergies he has diarrhea often, so something that could contain in those situations better than regular underwear is needed. |

You've got some great advice so far, but I just want to agree with everyone that I think Sandy's would be the way to go. Definitely something all-cotton. My DS has eczema, too, and diapering (cloth or sposies) has been somewhat of a challenge. I have to be really careful what I put on him or his skin will get irritated. Sandy's and flats have been perfect for us, and especially the Sandy's on a boy are great because they fit loose and allow a lot of breathing room which for sensitive skin is necessary. Also, they hold in loose poop really well so I think they would be great for you, and allow you to work on potty training. |

I started CDing my third when he was 18 months, so whenever you start is good timing! I think he PL'd by 24 months because of the cloth difference. He also is a trim kid and cloth kept his pants up. :)
I used trifolded prefolds (flats weren't the rage yet) under PUL covers for day, and a MotherEase One Size with doubler under an Aristocrats wool soaker for night. Looking back, I wish I'd invested in more MotherEase because I could have used them with my upcoming #4. You've received great advice. The Sandy's are a great choice for you, and you can sell them and recoup some of your investment when you're done because they hold their value so well. ETA: I just saw your comment about the loose poo, so trifolded pfs or flats are probably not your best option. My son has always had soft, squishy, frequent poo and several covers a day were soiled because the trifolded pf couldn't contain it. The cover always contained it but I didn't like going through covers like that. From what I've heard, the Sandy's contain well. Our MotherEase OneSize did too. Did you see you can get an introductory offer from MotherEase's website that includes a diaper, doubler and cover? Edited by ChrisOR - 06 May 2010 at 2:51pm |

I am probably not the best person for advice, but it looks like you've got some really good advice already given.
I switched to cloth when my son was 26 months . I was looking for the cheap investment and I bought: 24 unbleached prefolds from Little Lions (seconds) and 4 Thirsties duo wrap (size 2) covers from the Thirsties outlet. My son has loose stool - rarely formed, so whenever he poos, the wrap must be washed along with the PF. I wish I had bought six covers because of it (instead I had another baby and bought 8 more ). We've never had leakage with the covers, though, just really big messes. The system works great. I use disposables for night diaper (but just ordered some doublers today to attempt night diapering). Love PF's and love Thirsties. I looked at Antsy Pants (try googling). They are adorable and very nice for potty trainers (you can use them as diaper or pants). It was just too much an investment when I didn't know how long I'd be using them. I emailed customer service a couple times to determine sizing and they were quite helpful! Best of luck - and welcome to the world of cloth! ![]() Edited by Jaimeis - 06 May 2010 at 10:36pm |

Thank you so much everyone! My head is spinning over here trying to take all this in! I may take that introductory offer and also keep an eye out for used ones. I appreciate everyone's input!

The actual Mother Ease site has a FSOT section you could check out. That's where I bought mine. Personally, I am getting ready to sell off many of the ones I bought b/c they just don't fit either of my children right. DS is not quite three and determined as ever NOT to use the potty. I should have started sooner, but like Sarah didn't think it was possible with him. We started around 2 with great success those first couple of days (totally dry for two days, then pooped in the potty for the next couple of months), then I guess he decided he didn't want to do it anymore and now a year later he is just starting to use the potty again. I said all that just to encourage you to try it, but also to not get discouraged if it takes him a while (which, it might not!). As for diapers, I have settled on flats pad folded into a cover (no securing with pins or a snappi). It's about the cheapest way to go as far as cloth diapers are concerned and is super easy (I like Wonder Wraps and Bummis Super Whisper Wraps for durability, but Thirsties Duos are a great fit, too). Velcro covers are quick and easy to take off for trips to the potty and can be put back on while standing up which might be OK for the beginning stages. DS never could get the Sandy's down on his own so I ended up just unsnapping them like a diaper anyway. Other mamas have had great success with them, but we didn't for some reason. I know some kids need a definite difference between diapers and big boy pants so the pad/cover combo might not work, but I figured I would toss it out there. |

Thanks Renee! My little guy seems so much younger than my girls did at this age. He's still such a baby in many ways, except for his vocabulary. :) Even if we do work on potty learning I expect we'd have a long while with diapers at night and when he's not feeling well.
