Anyone still watching this? What do you think so far?
I have to say, I LOVE this show. It's nice to have something to entertain me while DH is out on Friday nights. lol. A few things I love:
1. he focuses on being healthy, not on weight. he does talk about weight sometimes, but only in regards to how it affects your health, not in regards to looking good. learning to focus on being healthy instead of thin, has been such a huge thing for me in the past several years, and i love that this is his approach.
2. he is showing that healthy can still be tasty and fun! i love that he's using "normal" foods, like beef and noodles and veggies - showing that healthy doesn't mean you have to eat tofu and salad everyday.
3. he's trying to make it practical. during one of his cooking sessions he used frozen veggies, because they're just as healthy, but more convenient.
4. he's getting to the heart of the issue - especially with the whole messed-up food program in public schools. the episode where his stir-fry did not meet regulations, but the processed chicken and fries did - ugh, that was just soooo frustrating.
5. i love that he sets such high goals. the last episiode with the 1000 people challenge was awesome - i love how he got the radio guy on board! Edited by yausers_2005 - 12 Apr 2010 at 6:01pm |

I've been watching and I really like it too. In the last episode it looked like the town was starting to get excited too! I wonder how the town is doing today...

I'm still watching it! It is slower than the first episode but I still really like it. It seems like he is really helping the people out. I love how he has the teenagers from the HS working with him. It's so important to get to the kids. The girl, I think her name was Britney, who was told she might die within 7 yrs and she's in high school! So sad. I would love to have some of his recipes. I love stir fry's and he has made a few that I would love to try. The one he made last week with the beef looked great.
It really has made me think more about what we are eating. |

I never seem to get a chance to watch the whole show and this shocked me - Jamie's veggie/noodle stir fry and a side of fresh fruit didn't have the required 1.5 cups of fruit and veggies per meal but a processed chicken burger and side of fries did because french fries count as a veggie . That is just terrible.
I would imagine that the people who drafted the "rules" had good intentions in requiring a school lunch to provide 1.5 cups of fruit/veggies but the application of the rule just doesn't seem to make sense. |

i have been recording it and watching when i get a chance or need a rest on the couch lol. i love what he's doing too, and agree that he's making it "real" for the people with the food he cooks and simple recipes with easily available ingredients, not crazy healthfood stuff everyone would shy away from.
dh watched the first episode with me and he thought it was good too, when he saw what those families were eating he thanked me for cooking real food! and linda, ugh that really got me too at the school- i dont know HOW that couldn't meet requirements when the fries did. i don't know anyone who would rather see their kid get served the burger/fries over pasta with veggies and fruit. crazy! |

i know! we live in a way better area for food than the place the show is filmed, and i am still appalled at what the school passes off as 'healthy'. parents should revolt and send sack lunches HAHA

It is ridiculous that the fries are considered a veggie. One of my girlfriends IRL said that she feels she isn't creative enough to send her kids to school with a packed lunch-- when literally almost anything would be better than the school stuff.
I liked the part the other day when I think it was Jamie, who said something along the lines of the children don't need to have a choice about what is offered at school. Adults need to be in charge of the quality of food and let the kids choose among better choices.

I've been watching. Since it is on on Friday nights it has actually been motivating me to cook healthy meals all weekend which is usually my weakness time for wanting easy, processed junk.
It is frustrating to see the cooks not want to change, and the whole french fries being a vegetable- that just makes no sense to me. Salad was optional for the chicken burger/fries, but couldn't be used as an optional for the stir fry? I remember those chicken burgers being served at my junior high/high school and those things were nasty. I always brought my own lunch from home.And- I forgot who was asking about the recipes, but if you go to Jamie Oliver's site http://www.jamieoliver.com/recipes/beef-recipes/beef-and-vegetable-stir-fry the stir fry recipe was on there. ![]() Edited by Mom2Miles - 13 Apr 2010 at 5:13pm |

and what cracks me up is WIC (who answer to the USDA) does NOT consider White Potatoes a vegetable, and they are disallowed for purchase in the states that have the 'Fruit/Veggie' vouchers (MT is one of those states). They are basically pure sugar/starch with the nutritional value of white bread. But at the same time the USDA is in charge of the meals at public school and Fries count as a vegetable? You can get way more nutrional value out of a giant bag of Frozen mixed veggies, heck there is more nutritional value in a Peanut butter cookie IMO--but then again i sneek extra healthy stuff into PB cookies
the one thing i wish our school would offer was soy or rice milk for the kids that are allergic to dairy instead of juice. |

We just started watching last week, so we watched teh rerun and new episode. I want to catch up on the ABC site.
The french fry thing is stupid. That is the number one answer *anyone* gives for vegetables in this country! It's just silly. I am not against them, but to think they count as a healthy veggie is absurd...and to be teaching our kids that is worse! I was so glad to see him take the fries away lol. I love that he not only shows it can taste good, but that it is quick and easy. That stir fry was like 20 minutes. There are lots of processed, boxed meals that take that long. They don't taste as good and obviously aren't good for you. I think it's fantastic that he's putting himself out there to do this. Not only is he a foreigner, but he's also famous...I think both are reasons he takes more crap. It takes guts for him to put healthy habits above himself. |

yup. basically they are fine once in awhile, but those teens were eating them EVERY DAY and skipping the 'optional' salad bar that Jamie wasn't even offered. I loved the look on the Super Intendant's face when he pointed that out LMBO!! eeeeawwwww

Totally agree. Alot of people are "turned off" by cooking because it takes too long but he makes fast, healthy meals. Laurie...thanks for the stir fry recipe link. I cracked up in the first episode when Alice said "we're beating a dead horse" and Jamie got this crazy look on his face and said "what does that mean?!?" LOL! |

I watched the 4 episodes on hulu yesterday. Loved them! I really love Jamie's attitude toward people. He's always talking how strong they are and how he wants their power on his side. People cling to what is familiar and comfortable and defend it as if it was their personal worth that was being challenged.
The flash mob really was one of the coolest things I've ever seen. Seriously the whole thing had me laughing and crying. I hope I can catch it on TV tonight. |

I just watched all of them on hulu this afternoon. Then we went out to dinner and of all the choices on Carrabba's children's menu (ravioli, cheese pizza, chicken fingers, etc) he chose the grilled chicken. And for his side ( he had a choice of mashed potato, pasta with pomodoro sauce, or broccoli) he chose you guessed it broccoli! I just thought the contrast was hilarious. My 4 year old wanted this. Now this is the first time he has ever chosen that, but after watching that show right before eating it was especially noticeable to me. My 2 year old chose pizza, but she also ate the most salad she has ever eaten before at dinner and loved it.
Sorry just thought it was funny and I just noticed more what they ate after watching that show. I can't imagine eating all the yellow looking food the one family ate for all their meals all the time. yuck. And I always brough lunch in school because school lunch was so gross. Except on pizza hut pizza day. This show also reminds me of the show on bbc, you are what you eat. British processed food is even grosser than ours in many cases.

so i watched again last night. honestly, it was a little more boring this time, lol. but i still enjoyed it. i did really like watching his "breakthrough" at the high school, though. i liked how he said that if you give teens a little credit, they really will shine through. i also really like that he publicly apologized - in my experiences working with youth, one of their main complaints about adults is that they rarely apologize or admit that they're wrong - so i think that earned him a lot of credibility with the teens. also, it was probably good that he was serving pasta and meat sauce that day - don't get wrong, i love stir fries, but something a little more "familiar", was probably good for the big testing day.

I never thought about the sugar content in flavored milk either. The kids only get it on special occasions (like once/month) but I never thought about it either. Glad we only have it as a very special treat.

I never thought about it either, or at least never would have thought it was worse than soda! I love chocolate milk and have it way too much. I do mix up my own, but I don't know if that makes it any better. DS never gets it. There is no reason at his age, and now, knowing that info, it will only be a special treat as he gets older.
We watched the new one last night. Did anyone else find it counterintuitive that those hospital people danced around supporting Jamie? I mean, it's no secret what the CDC said. I had heard it before the show. Then the lady talking about businesses wanting to come there. Well, don't you think a business looking for a new location would find that info out? It's not going to be about Jamie's revolution; it's about the CDC report. So, wouldn't it make you look better to a business to show that you are doing something about it and being successful? Not to mention that your image to the rest of the world shouldn't be more important than the health of your citizens. Who cares if it's true or not, you can look on the streets anywhere in our country and now that people need help...this city has an incredible opportunity to give it to them and should jump on it! |

I have always tried to steer away from the flavored milks because I knew they had alot of sugar but I remember when Madison was maybe 2 and I kept trying to get her to drink chocolate milk because I thought she would like it better. She liked white milk just fine and wouldn't drink the chocolate...thank goodness! What was I thinking?!? Just like so many other parents though. Luckily she didn't like it. Phew!
I also was thrown back by the hospital people worrying about the CDC report saying it wasn't all true. How's it not true? You are the fattest city in America. I had to laugh at the guy that said it was actually a 5 county area so that changed things. Yeah, it makes it worse. You're not only the fattest city but the fattest area. I must say that I got hooked on chocolate milk when I was training for my marathon last year. It is awesome to drink after a long run. It has the protein to help build back the muscle and the carbs to give you quick energy. I HAD to have it after every long run! |

I'm an episode or two behind, but I really like this show. It does both me a bit that some of the things that are said/done are really overdone to add more drama (like Alice -- is that her name? -- in the kitchen at the elementary school... and the radio DJ... seems a bit scripted if you ask me), but I can overlook all of that because of the positive message that Jamie Oliver is putting out there. No matter how cheesy or overdramatized this show may get, I will continue to support it because this country really needs a change.

Aimee, my DH drinks chocolate milk as part of his "regimen". He's read about it in several fitness magazines that the protein is great after lifting weights. It is better for you to drink than an energy or protein drink, too.
Jessica, I agree about exaggeration. DH couldn't get over how fake he thought the whole DJ thing was. Whether it was for the TV show or for the radio show, I am sure one or both parties was exaggerating. I used to work in radio, and I could totally have seen our morning guy act like that just for the "look" of it, kwim? |
