just fyi, there's no recall (yet). but the company that makes Amby baby hammocks seems to have shut down.

i was thinking of buying on of CL, but went over to the Baby Bargains.com forum and folks and the consensus over there is to not use them.

apparently there were three deaths that are under investigation. statiscally i'm not sure what that really means. but it spooked me enough to want to steer clear.

heck, cosleeping is looking safer every day.

Scary, I used an Amby for years and loved it.
So glad my kids are safe. I will give them extra hugs at bedtime tonight!

That is scary! I have an Amby. DS hardly slept in it, but I was hoping to use it in the future. It's the only bassinet approved by the JMPA so I assumed it was safe! Confused

i was a little shy about spreading rumors just based on other forum posts. (one of the dads has been posting on a few forums, he does sound legit, poor guy). but figured i'd just draw attention to the issue and let you all judge.

but apparently JMPA took Amby off their website (haven't checked myself). And i don't think it bodes well that people say you can't get in touch w/the company at all. (just the home page is up on their site with a note that they're not selling them, none of the other links seems to work).

i know it is unnerving! i'm sort of a gear-head, but am now thinking: less gear, fewer worries.

It's official now. It's been recalled.

I have a Kanoe hammock, but it has no cushion and the fabric is breathable so I feel okay about it.

thanks for the update Summer. i changed the subject line to make that clear and draw more attention.

the breathable fabric/no cushion arrangement of the Kanoe sounds safe. curious if arms reach is going to continue making their "cocoon" which is sort of like the amby, but somewhat different.

I have a Happy Hangup with no cushion, I'm pretty comfortable with it.  As comfortable as I am with her anywhere.

I almost got the Happy Hangup, but the Kanoe had a rental plan so I could basically try it out before buying it. Also, the Kanoe has a higher weight limit, I think.

If you check the Amby website, they are offering a free repair kit. Not sure what it's supposed to do, exactly, but I ordered mine. I was hoping to use the bed again for our next LO. I still think I would use it with a newborn, we put rolled up receiving blankets on each side of DS so he couldn't move at all. I don't think I would use it for an older baby. The babies that died were 4 & 5 months old, so they were able to roll over.

I bought mine used, so got a steal on it.  Never could have done it otherwise.  I love it!  Also, weight limit hasn't been an issue with any of my miniature kids. LOL

Mine couldn't roll over at 4-5 months. She didn't roll over until well after she was crawling. It was a little odd. Well, she could roll front to back, but not back to front. I didn't really encourage it because she was sleeping in the bed and I liked not having to worry about her rolling all over!

Kris, I love the Kanoe! It's the only place DD will sleep that's not on me! Although, she won't do it during nap but at night DH and I get an hour before we head to bed so it's been worth it for that. I didn't get it until she was maybe 10-11 months old, I think? So I can't speak to having a teeny babe in it. It's really big though. It's still plenty big for her at 17 months. She's not a huge girl, by any stretch, but she's not teeny either. Average for height.

Initially I had some adjustment issues with it. It was really high off the ground (it anchors to the ceiling). I just didn't expand all the straps, but once I did, it's perfect. Uhm. That's all I can think of. Feel free to ask questions.

Here are some pics. That's a pillowcase (dirty, from the bed so it would smell like where she was used to sleeping) under her head. Otherwise, there's no cushion and no bedding. I added the little butterfly, obviously. Oh, also, she can't really stand up in it. I've come up when she's woken up and she's gotten onto all fours and she tries to stand, but it doesn't work. And when I've put her in it in a standing position, the rails come up under her armpits and she can't really move about in it. It's sort of like if you tried standing in a regular hammock - it really doesn't work. So I'm not really worried about her going overboard. (And if she did, it's just not that high off the ground.

Thanks so much Summer. I'm about 95% sure that is what I want for the newest babe. We tend to be a pretty mobile family and I love the idea that it would travel so easily (that is my mom could put a hood in her ceiling) or I could have several places around the house.

Since we thought we were done, I have no crib, bassinet, co-sleeper... nada. Not even a nursing pillow lol. So um, yeah, starting from scratch which means I get to look at all options again which is pretty fun. I'm most attracted to this one b/c it looks like it would work long enough to put the kiddo straight into a twin bed once the time came.
