MIL is pretty insistant upon getting us a dipe service but we're just not interested and would rather she just buy us some covers because we already have 2 dozen greenmountain orange pf.
How many days will 6 NB covers last us? Would you call that one day, two days? I suppose it depends on whether or not the cover needs washed, right?
BTW, I'm also knitting covers so we're just looking for something to add to the stash for MIL to get us.
Maybe I should also add yellow and red pf. I'm planning to tell her she could also get the next size in covers as well.
TIA ladies!

6 covers for the NB stage lasted us at least 2 days. We loved our orange-edge pf's! i definitely don't see the need for a diaper service at that age. Congratulations on your new LO!

I know I shouldn't make any final decisions on types of dipes but I really like the price tag of pf and flats. From what I've read, it seems they're easier to care for as well.
Thanks for your help. I was thinking it would be a couple of days so I think I can tell her that the price of 6 covers is equivalent to the cost of one months service and we'll have a weeks worth of diapering once you add the wool we already have.
COOL!

Yep, I have six NB covers for my new little baby. She's not here yet, but 6 is our plan. We did the same thing you're doing and had my mom, who was going to buy us 13 weeks of diaper service, use 2/3 of the money to buy J's stash. (We used the service for 5 weeks.)

I'm the weirdo who likes to have 8. But I just fold my PF's and lay them in. We get poo on covers alot. I also like to have 8 pre-loaded and ready to wear. So I use a cover/pf, toss the pf in the pail and lay the cover over the side of the changing table. At the end of the day I can have 6-8 covers (per baby, I have 2 in cloth with another at night) laying on the side of my CT. Then in the evening I put new folded PF in the covers and stack them for each kid. If a cover is too dirty to reuse then I toss it in the diaper pail to be washed. 8 means that I almost never have to handwash a cover AND I always have a days worth of covers loaded. :)

I was hoping I'd be able to just hang covers on the changing table to be used the following day. I thought it was a bit much to think that each and every cover had to be washed after one use.
What about some more dipes?
Would you suggest getting some fitteds? It seems I've been reading that fitteds work best with wool rather than pf. This could just be preference but I've seen that a bit. I could add fitteds to my list if mil is going to get the covers.
If you had two dozen orange edge would you get nb fitteds? Or would you go to the next size?

I recall 6 covers being about 1 days worth for me. But I often trifolded for convenience and seemed to have a super pooper. I also never reuse a cover that has even a faint smell of pee. It depended on the cover for me whether it wiped clean enough for reuse, proraps and bumkins come to mind as being very nice in that aspect. If you've got two dozen orange edge, I would think that's enough and spend the dough on the small to medium fitteds where you'll get more use out of them. I really enjoyed prefolds in the newborn stage and then other types of diapers after a few months when things start fitting better. BTW, nice MIL for helping you out like that. |

If you're going to fasten the prefolds (with a snappi or pins) then 6 covers is definitely enough for a newborn. The first day or two you might go through all 6 as you get the hang of doing it efficiently, but otherwise you'll be fine.
I love having fitted and pockets for variety, but really I don't see much need for fitteds if you're totally fine using the prefolds at the newborn stage. (Personally, I'm not a fan of fitteds until they're out of the onesies-all-the-time stage...then my kids go coverless.)

OK, so correct me if I'm wrong, it seems I should get the 6 covers I'm considering and then see what kind of a pooper we've got. Then if we need more we can always order.
As for mil, I don't think for a moment that she knew how much a diaper service was. This is the same woman who won't spend more than $20 on a birthday or holiday gift for dd or our niece. However, I want to give her the option of doing something because I shot her idea down by telling her we already had some nb pf and probably wouldn't be needing a service. I'm also not certain she believed the service is $80 a month.
In the email I sent earlier, I basically told her that I did a price comparison and discovered the 6 covers were slightly cheaper, sent a few links with sizes and colors, and suggested that if she wanted to do the covers that she could call me. I'll be surprised if she buys what we're asking for. I suppose I could have said yes to the service and she would have had to pay for it. (OK, I'm going to you-know-where for that comment

I think 6 should be a good starting amount of covers. I think we had 4 but we were always running out. Good luck getting help buying the diapers you want. I registered for cloth diapers and specifically said NO clothing please. The week after my shower I was running all over town returning clothes. Oh well, I like diaper shopping anyway.

My mom keeps buying clothes for me and the baby. Don't get me wrong. I enjoy getting new clothes but I end up returning half of them so I've got gift cards for more stores than I care to travel to and HELLO we don't even know the gender yet and Grandma's buying blue clothes! lol This is after specifically asking her to buy dipes.
Oh well. Maybe mil will get the point.

i squeked by on 5 at first (one night wool, one day wool and three PUL), but 6 is much more sane.
and with a dipe service don't you have to still buy/launder your own covers anyway?
and you've got poopy/ammonia-forming dipes sitting in your house for a whole week -- nasty.
hope she comes around! Edited by ambrose - 02 Jul 2009 at 1:43pm |

I think 6 is a good number. We always got BF poo on them. I just washed them in the sink and hung them to dry. I really liked the XS Thirsties. They lasted a long time.

I haven't heard back from her on the email I sent. She's the type to respond just to be sure you know she received your email so it's odd that I haven't heard from her. Only time will tell if she sees the light
I was thinking I would just hand wash small messes. I thought about getting a woool wash bar for spot cleaning wool and I've been looking for some kind of a laundry drying rack to fit in the bathroom where the dipe basket/bag will be.
I am so thrilled to have already figured so much of this stuff out. Once December rolls around maybe I won't have such a learning curve with this stuff.
Thanks so much ladies! Your input has been invaluable, as always

I have a 2 1/2 week old. I've been CDing for about a week and a half. I have 9 covers, 3 Thirsties XS, 4 BSWW nb and 2 others. I bought the 3 Thirsties new and the rest used. I lay my orange edge pf in them and keep them ready to go for DH because it is only one step for him. For me I mostly use KL0s. I find the nine covers are more than enough considering I usually have 2 or 3 in the diaper bag and one of the covers I don't care too much for.
I think 6 would be fine unless you want and extra one or two to keep in the diaper bag. As for types, I love my Thirsties and also like the BSWW.
For fitteds, I have several KL0s that I got used from a friend. I love them especially with the turn down for the cord.
Good luck.
