when our part-time sitter takes Sol off on adventures she takes my car.
in the fall i think her college schedule might allow her to pick up Sol from preschool at least one day, possibly two. which makes me want to get her a seat so that can work timing-wise (her college is closer to preschool than i am). she said she would be glad to have one installed.
and that makes me think we may as well get something now. (but we are behind on reviewing our budget, so no idea if we can even manage that) it's also a pain cause we have to shuffle around the cars in the driveway when she take my car, cause she often arrives before my husband leave.
she has a subaru outback which is a really safe car, so that also appeals to me (i have a hyundai elantra, which i think is pretty good -- but i wish i had anti-lock brakes). and i know i'm a better driver when i'm in my own car cause of the familiarity issue.
So question #1: should i spring for a seat for her? I'd like to have her around for the long-term -- and she just finished her sophomore year so i think i can get her for at least 2 more years (possibly 3 if she take a year off to apply for me school)
And question #2: what should i get her? i've never used any other covertible other than a britax marathon. do they fit in an outback? seen a lot about TrueFits and outbacks -- are they a better match?
and i'm not sure if this matters but we're TTC, so maybe that seat would come back to us in some way at some point for the second child? (but at 39 i'm not gonna count my chickens...) Edited by ambrose - 12 May 2009 at 7:15pm |

It's defiantely more conveniant to have multiple seats. My shed is like a carseat graveyard now, I need to donate them or something. The older boys both had Alpha Omegas. I wasn't as into doing the research then as I am now. Though DH and I were both in accidents this past year, so maybe that's what changed my views. We've almost always had as many carseats as people who would be watching or picking up the kids. For mid kid when he was a toddler that meant one each for me and DH, one for his bio dad, one for grandma, and one for my sister. Granted I didn't have to buy them all myself, grandma got one for herself etc. It's such a pain to transfer carseats. Hope you find something that works for you.

We have a Cosco Scenera in both of our parents' cars. It's the most recommended back up seat and it's really cheap. It only goes up to 40 lbs, but it's great for little ones- if you end up needing it for that- and really reasonable pricewise, so if you end up needing something on the higher end of the weight range in the future, you can get a brand new seat and not be out too much money for the Scenera- or use it for the younger one and get a higher weight range seat for the older. That's what I would do. They have one at Babies R Us right now that's pretty snazzy- orange and black.

when i was a nanny i had both seats in my car all the time. granted, i was with them sixty plus hours a week but even as a sitter it would be nice to have a car seat for each child. if i were the sitter, it would be more appealing knowing i was ready to move at any given moment, not having to worry about this and that and where is the seat, who is parked where? simplify.

It looks like KMart has one in a nice fabric right now and it's a good price.

I would you could always use an extra seat. Even if you don't have another they hold their resale value. I know you are not supposed to buy used car seats but people do.

If you can afford it, yes, I'd get her a seat.

I would feel safer because you could install it and teach her how it needs to be installed and make sure it's in there as tight as possible and stuff.
