Hello my name is Lauren and I am just starting my second trimester for my first baby. I plan on using cloth diapers but there are so many brands I am feeling overwhelmed on how to pick which one is best...I am hoping to get some input and advice from more experienced moms on which brands worked best and which didn't work for you...For me it is important that the diapers are not too bulky so I'm thinking maybe an all in one is better but I have no idea what I'm talking about so anyone who has used cloth diapers and has any input on any type, quantity, best place to buy etc...I would greatly appreciate it thanks so much in advance and I look forward to reading all of your posts

I would say try a sample pack and see what you like. One brand I highly do not recommend is Kushies. I live in Canada as well, and buy most of my diapers from the states. I've been buying for two years now and have only once or twice be charged taxes. I find the prices are better in the states as well. I know there are a couple B&M stores in Canada but I can't for the life of me remember any of them right now. There was a thread a while back listing stores in Canada. If you find maybe you can see if any of the stores are close to where you live. That way you can check out the diapers in person.

Thanks so much for the info I really appreciate it...I actually did find a location near me and they have a sample package that you can borrow and use for a week with a deposit to find out what works best but I'm not sure if when I first get my baby home from the hospital that I want to be worrying about what diaper works best ...you know

I've been using pockets and a few AIOs since my daughter was born a month ago. The one-size pockets work OK (BumGenius and Mommy's Touch) but they were a bit big at first and rubbed on DD's cord stump.
I find that I am really liking Thirsties Hybrid AIOs (x-small to start with), and once DD got big enough, Drybees pockets. I've also tried Knickernappies (small), Snap-EZ (small), and Fuzzi Bunz (x-small, old style); all three fit all right during the itty-bitty stage when the Drybees were too big, but I'm not a huge fan of any of them now that she's peeing all the time. |

I have a variety of one size diapers. all of them are pockets (bumgenius, tiny tush, happy heiny, mommy's touch, haute, wonderworks, and cozzybunz) except two (softbums, which is an ai2/aio diaper and aio mommy's touch diaper). the only diaper that fit my dd at birth was softbums. once her cord stump fell off bum genius and tiny tush fit. all the others fit too but were bulky. I personally hate stuffing. I love my Softbums aio/ai2 diapers because there is no stuffing, they truely do fit from birth to potty training ( tried them on my ds who is almost 3), they are absorbent ( dd can go all night from 8 to 8 without any extra stuffing still at 6 months old), and the are trimmer in the crotch then other diapers so they fit dd mush better. check them out at www.softbums.com

I agree with genny....I get most of my dipes from the States. Even with shipping, they are still usually cheaper than what our Canadian stores charge, AND you get a much larger selection. That being said, there are some good Canadian WAHM's and stores.
What province are you in?

I would also suggest a sample pack of different types. Also try some PF's. I started with Pockets thinking they were great. I had 2 in diapers and though One Size would be wonderful. I hated stuffing pockets & synthetic fibers are harder to keep clean.
I started using PF's and LOVE them. Even though they are not one size, DS and DD are in the same size PF even though DD is 13# heavier than DS. They are so easy to use with a snappi. You could even try a prefitted, like Tinkle Traps. Tammy will turn your PF into a fitted. Also with a fitted or PF you can pick your covers. Fleece, wool, or PUL. I really like this because in the summer PUL can be rather warm but fleece and wool keep babies bum cool because they are breathable. Also with fitteds and PF's you only need 6 covers or so, so they really aren't to expensive, as long as you stay away from the expensive fitteds
I also find that PF's and fitteds are trimmer and more absorbant than PD's and AIO. By the time I put enough stuffing in a PD they were huge. A PF absorbes more than 2 MF inserts in a PD, IMO. With an AIO I still had to put extra doubler in so they had a nice "fluffy bum". PF's for me are the trimmest option, even when I use a doubler in them.
Oh, and most One Size diapers don't start fitting well until 10-12# so depending on the size of your little one it could be a while before you can use them. PF's will fit from the beginning and a lot of mama's get away with only 3-4 sizes over the life of the baby so even with buying that many sizes, they are still really inexpensive because they are cheap to start with. Wish I would have started with PF's and saved the headache of selling off what didn't work.
Note about All In Ones - They usually take a long time to dry and can something be hard to get clean because there are so many layers, it can be harder for the detergent to rinse out.

Ditto! I started with Fuzzi Bunz pockets, wasn't thrilled with the fit on DS (I am thinking his proportions are a little off... skinny skinny waist, and little thunder thighs), although I am sure if I never found the Pin I would probably either still be using them and getting frustrated, or would have resorted back to sposies. I have tried BG AIOs (great fit, had a horrible time keeping them clean with our water type), BG 3.0 One Size (use these for nights now - two microfiber inserts are pretty trim compared to any other combo we have tried and it has the stay dry liner which I like), fitteds (once again, harder to clean b/c of the thickness), and now I am exclusively using Tinkle Traps prefitteds and prefolds with PUL or fleece covers (during the day). I got my TT off of FSOT (for sale or trade) and my PFs from greenmountaindiapers.com - they are more expensive, but I like their sizing a lot better. |

Part of it will depend on your baby's build, so some diapers might fit really well and some might not. I have tried almost everything out there and the brands that have lasted the longest is Blueberry and Swaddlebees (same owner). Those things have been used a lot and still look new and have perfect elastic. In fact I am going to get my son some more Swaddlebees. Side snapping diapers are great because they tend to be very trim and accommodate different builds. My son hates being wet and always have, so we have to use the Swaddlebees with fleece in them to keep his skin dry. Like other ppl said, try a sampler pack or rent some diapers for a couple of weeks and see what works for you and your baby.

Just wanted to say I agree that you should NOT try kushies!!! I'm always tempted since you can buy them locally (like at Sears) but I've heard over and over that it's a waste of money.
I also buy all my cloth diapers from the States, but my family is there, so I can ship to them.

Sposo easy is great for day time, not too bulky and great absorbency. For night time I like Re-Uz Em Elite or Classic they both the same just the Elite has an extra snap I put 2 small skinny hemp doubler underneath for extra absorbency and no leaks, and covers great. My baby is a heavy wetter thats why I need the hemp doubler. The hemp doubler I buy from greenmountaindipaers.com I use the small ones so they dont add extra bulk.
To be honest with u when I first got the Re Uz Em Elite I was a bit worried cause it looks a bit weird but its awesome. I first got the sposos and then I decided to try the others. I line dry and this is the only diaper that dries super fast(faster than a prefold). Also its so cheap, before I used prefolds with imse vimse cover(just the cover cost as much as this all in ones). Just one more thing dont get the edgy neutral unless you love animal prints , cause I have a boy and I got this crazy leopard print one. Its weird. The neutral prints are super cute and its soft because they put the waterproof between cotton layers, so the outerlayer is cotton. If I were you I would order one of each of the 3 kinds to see which one you like. Also a pluss that you dont have to wash them a million times to reach great absorbency, 1 wash and its good to go. My first cloth diapers were swaddlebees econappi( leak everytime), I sold them all. Sorry for the long message, just one more thing, bluepenguin.com has a great customer service also. I was buying some diapers and I didnt even realize that they were the part of the specials and they still gave me the discount and also sent me extra doublers. |

I also say try a sample pack.
I assumed I'd love the AIOs....until I actually tried them. We ended up with pre-folds and Bummis covers (only covers I tried that fit DS's chunky thighs well) for daytime, hemp with a microfiber insert and a cover for night, and bumGenius 3.0s for when we're out and about on the town. I thought I'd hate pre-folds, but they're really easy to use and so versitile! |
