Hi - I am looking for some wisdom please : )

I have a DS who will be 2 in June and a little one due in July.  I would like to switch over to CD's.  Not sure where to start exactly.  I have checked out bumgenius (love that both children can use at the same time, if I am understanding correctly), kissaluvs. thristies and kushies.

Not sure if I should get a few of each thing in different sizes or stick with one thing?  How many diapers might I need for the toddler?? newborn??

Do you start newborns on CD's right away or do you wait a bit??

Any other words of wisdom will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Brandi

For your toddler you're going to need about 18 dipes, allowing you to wash every other day.  For a baby they say 24-36, allowing you to wash every other day.  You may need to wash every day with two in dipes, so then you'd need about half that.

One size dipes aren't going to fit a newborn, so you'll still need newborn dipes.  Some people start newborn in cloth right in the hospital, other wait till after the meconium poops are through.

I would say you should get a few (2-3) of a few different dipes to start with.  That way you can figure out which you like best and which fit each kid the best.  Not all dipes work on all babies.

My opinion:  my son was 18 months when we switched to cloth.  He's a very heavy wetter and was going through 10 diapers a day still.  So 18 didn't cut it for us.  We had 36.  Then if we were gone 3 days in a row i didn't run out.  He's 36 months now and uses 7-8 diapers each day, so we only have 24 now.  My favorite dipes from your list are kissaluvs and thirsties.  For us Thirsties are trimmer and more absorbent that the kissaluvs, but i still like them. I have 3 bumGenius AIO's, but just haven't been super happy with them.  I've never tried kushies.

I have a new LO due in just a week or so! Congrats to you!!

I started using CD on my 8mo old almost 2 years ago.  I prefer prefolds, dappi covers, and a smattering of pockets just for general ease and streamlining (i never had much success with AIO or Fitteds)

For my now 2 year old i only need about 18-24 diapers. 12 for the bucket and 6 to get through wash day plus a few extras just in case.

For a new born you will be using a minimum of 12/ day so i would get at least 36 NB/S size to start.

IMO, one size diapers are just mediums with a big size range.  They're not truly one size, in that they don't usually work well for tiny newborns or large toddlers.  I never really took to the bgos, but my dd was already on the middle rise setting at 2 mos.  She'd probably be on the largest setting now at 4 mos and 18 lbs.

As an experiment, I tried my 4 m/o dd's medium bummis super whisper wraps and pfs on my petite 3 y/o and they 'almost' fit her, so my medium covers and trimmed pfs are almost as good as os, IMO.  Thirsties covers are also generously sized.

If it were me, I'd get 2 dozen pfs and 4-6 covers for each kiddo and maybe 1/2 dozen pockets or aios per kid for trips/daddy dipes.  I really like the Thirsties pocket aios.  They are super trim and you don't have to add anything to the pocket, but you can for heavy wetters, nights and long trips.  OTOH, I'm a pf person and some people really prefer the convenience of pockets/aios...

I've heard lots about BG OS not being a true OS dipe.  The ONLY OS dipe that I've personally seen that is a "real" OS dipe is the HH OS.  Seriously - I've seen pics on a NB and they would fit my 33ish lb 3 year old with room to grow (if she needed them).  I can't remember the guy's username...something like dadtobe or something??  He posted pics of his little newborn in them and they weren't any bulkier than most other sized dipes would be.  I also like the fact that HH has stood the test of time (so to speak) with their dipes - BG's latest version hasn't been out for long enough to prove itself as far as durability.

Newborn needs 36 dipes or so, I'd say.  Toddler, I like 24.  I had 18 for my toddler and it was ok, but 24 is definitely better!!  If you go the OS route, I'd get 4 dozen total and just wash frequently.  You won't fit that many dipes in the washer at once anyway...

I'm a bit of a fan of huggabuns.com - they are well made dipes and seem like they'd last quite nicely (though I've not had them long).  Plus, they're cheaper than most.   But they are not an OS dipe.

Only get a few of any one type of dipe to start out with.  YOu don't know how they'll work or fit and you'll not be happy if you have 3 dozen of a dipe that doesn't work well for you.

I'm not a fan of one size diapers myself.  I haven't found them to be truly one size.  I like aio diapers for all ages.  Right now for our 6 mo. old I have him in fitteds with covers or wool soakers at night and aios during the day.  Our 3 yr. old is out of diapers now, but she was also in aios up until she stopped using them.
For me I've found that I like some variety and I don't mind having different brands/types of diapers, but dh did!  He likes all of the diapers to be the same so he can just change the baby and not worry about does this need a stuffer?  did I take the stuffer out? what snap setting? etc.  He would get overwhelmed and sneak sposies in the house for his changes LOL.  Stinker.  So we have all aio diapers for day and at night it's a fitted with a doubler and a cover (I put the babe in shorties/longies/etc, but dh goes with what he knows).
HTH and congratulations on your pregnancy! Smile

Are Pfs out? They are much easier on the budget. I found it was hard to find a fitted diaper that fit well and had good containment since they're all different so I have a lot of those I haven't used much. The fitteds I do like (swaddlebees) I use in the middle of the night when changing in the dark.
