Ok....I'm. 2&1/2 months into CD & I still totally love it....but I have 3 questions...
1. When do I graduate to the next size prefold diaper...any rules of thumb? 2. How do you know when your diapers are worn out? Could my diapers be there already? 3. Why do my wipes smell in my warmer if I use the nice diaper wipe solution and witch hazel and distilled water? I think that's it for now... thanks guys |

1. When you can't fit the current ones on your baby. Or they out pee them too quickly.
2. Shot elastic? frayed? You shouldn't be near there yet though. 3. You have to change out the wipes and rinse out the warmer every 3 days or so even w/ witch hazel & distilled water. Warm + wet is just the perfect breading ground for yuckiness.

1. When you can't get much overlap at the hips or when the rise doesn't come up to the bellybutton. So when you're thinking, "what is UP with these diapers...why can't I get them on right!!" You can always buy your next size up and see how it fits. I mean, you will be able to tell when it's just too big of course (way too much fabric!). I was surprised by how well the bigger size fit the first time I sized up, though.
2. A prefold will be worn out when you get holes all over. It doesn't really wear out before then. Other types of diapers - you're looking for shot elastic (like in the leg area...when you hold the diaper up and there's no stretch left). Or if you're getting holes. I have a few AI2s that are getting all holey but I still use them as there's no holes in the PUL layer - just the absorbent areas. Holes in PUL are kinda a big deal. Generally PUL lasts a very long time, though.
3. I have never left wipe solution for more than a few hours, honestly. It grows yucky stuff and I do NOT want to use that on my baby's bum!! If it smells musty, then it's growing yucky things. I mean, it starts growing yucky things before you can smell them. wipe solution lacks the preservatives that sposie wipes have. Both a positive and a negative in one.
I used to make up a morning and afternoon batch of wipes...just toss whatever I didn't use in the pail. I use water from the tap now - just wet the wipes as I need them. |

i got rid of my warmer for that reason. i was constantly (it seemed) cleaning it and going through wipes like crazy. i now use a peri bottle and change it when needed and don't waste so much. if i want warm wipes, i just use tap water to get the wipes wet and add solution if i need to. there was a learning curve to remember the wipes BEFORE changing the diaper

Ugh....I want warm wipes in the warmer that smell good! Sounds like I could maybe just keep a container. Of water in the warmer and spray with the mixed solution. My son adores his warm wipes...and so do I and so does my husband...they're so luxurious. I can get my son to urinate almost every time I change him so its been helping with the absorbancy issue I'm having with one or two diapers a day... sounds like I am close to upsizing....I have the next size waiting in the closet.
So since he has outgrown the first. Size in under 3 months... how long does the next size last? Do I need a third size to span size 2 and potty training? Should I try flats for that and integrate my supply? Ugh so many questions....and the weirdest one of all.... why do I love diapers so much? I look forward to every change! |

What kind of diapers are you using? We used standard infant prefolds and infant tinkle traps prefitteds early on and upsized to red edge pfs and premium tinkle traps around maybe 6weeks/2months? At first, no doublers, then preemie pfs as doublers. The red edge pfs and premium tinkle traps still fit k now (she will be 2 in nov), we just dont need to fold down the rise and I use infant pfs as doublers. And always just tap water for wipes, no warmer. in my experience they pee even with room temp water. :S
and seriously, i'm impressed you got 3 months out of nb/small dipes! :) try upsizing- it will probably help. :) |

You know, the size ones from diaper rite....ugh I know I done speak the lingo yet with all the acronyms... they vary in size between bleached and unbleached. The unbleached prefolds are about an inch and a half smaller than my bleached so I find I grab those first and the unbleached are.basically barely fitting. I'll upsize this week but still use.the bleached in transition. I have the osocozy unbleached prefolds as well in both sizes and they are so narrow and awkwardly long that they never fit him even as a newborn. I really dread using them in the next size up. I am going to hem the smaller size so they are shorter in case I have a smaller baby...but I basically just use them as burp cloths

I'm in the use-warm-water-from-the-tap school. But had my changing areas in bathrooms.
hmm, for a compromise: maybe you could make a coffee thermos of warm wipe solution to last you the day? Anyone ever try that?

When cool-weather camping with itty bitties we put warm water and wipes in a thermos for nighttime changes. It works well! |

my ds wore sz medium (15-30 lbs setting) from 3 mos to present. he is 15 mos, 23 lbs, and we still have growing room in prefolds, flats and pockets. he can also go longer in between diaper changes no problem if wearing flip organic insert only or with an added doubler. i only have a handful of OS pockets, otherwise, i really hope what i have will take me to potty training! also, my 3 mo dd is in medium setting too (bulky but no leaks), they wear same dipes, so much easier when sorting diaper i think.
