with ds we had a top loader and used purex f&c with no issues. by the time dd was born we had our front loader and she had a ton of skin issues anyway, we ended up using dawn almost all the time because everything irritated her. we use ecos on our regular laundry, but i'm willing to switch to something else if that's what i need to do. i can't use tide because it irritates my skin and dd's. country save didn't work for us either.
i haven't washed diapers in a long time and i'm starting over with an all cotton stash - tinkle traps and prefolds. we'll be washing at least every other day, if not daily, with twins. i'm probably going to install a sprayer on the toilet that's in the laundry room for later on. so what do you use or recommend? and i guess throw in your whole routine while you're at it ![]() |

I am using Purex Natural Elements right now. I had been using Tide off and on for a couple of years, but the scent started to bother me. I use the Purex on regular laundry, and decided to try it on the diapers. They come out clean and fresh smelling.
I use all cotton diapers, and do a cold prewash, a hot wash with detergent, and a hot wash with no detergent. I have an HE top-loader. Jessica |

At our old house we had terrible iron water and I went through trying tons of things and routines and nothing would work. Thankfully we moved right about when it got impossible to deal with. Since we moved here I've been using BioKleen powder in my FL and that was working fine, but recently I started having ammonia problems from mineral build-up, I think. I stripped with RLR and they seem to be fine now, but I haven't been happy with BioKleen lately and I found some Nellie's on clearance at Marshall's so I'm trying that.
Right now my routine is: Delicate wash with no soap on cold/cold, no spin with extra water Regular wash with one scoop of Nellie's on hot/cold with extra water and extra rinses |

We use homemade laundry detergent (a combination of washing soda, borax and oxi clean) we wash every other day and it goes something like this - hot wash with no detergent (sometimes I throw in a little vinegar) , hot wash with detergent then we either line dry or use the dryer.

Timely post, I was just going to ask what folks used for diaper laundry!
I've been through All F&C, Tide, and Dawn only in our FLer in the same house, same water. But I think our issues evolved as my kids grew. Trying All F&C again with my newborn because that's what I used with newborn ODD, and I had some on hand. |

I LOVE Lil' Outlaws detergent! I've never had a problem with it :)
My routine (we have a non-HE top loader)- Cold rinse-Small water setting-couple glugs of vinegar Cold wash/rinse- Medium or Large water setting with 2 Tbsp detergent and occasional 1/4-1/2 c bleach when needed. Line dry when I can and then fluff in the dryer. |

We have moderately hard water and a HE TL. Cold "quick wash" with a bit of oxyclean free liquid and a wet towel, then a hot heavy wash with Calgon and tide free with the towel again, then extra rinse. Line dry everything unless it's raining. Wash every two days.

i've used country save almost exclusively. i tried rockin' green hard rock, unscented, on my pockets and have had diaper rash issues ever since. i recently stripped with RLR though, i just haven't tried them cause i'm loving my prefolds at the moment.
i rarely bleach. some of my prefolds that had obviously been bleached before (the stitching is very light blue instead of normal blue) are starting to fray along the edges. i guess it's to be expected though, they went through at least 3 kids before i got them! :) i sometimes use oxyclean or washing soda as a booster just to give it a bit more oomph. we're talking once a month or so. |

I've been using country save for 4 years. I've done the same wash routine - cold rinse, hot wash, hot rinse. Dry in the dryer.

i really wish country save would have worked for me. all f&c makes dd break out all over, so that's out i suppose. i'm wondering if the ecos will work on diapers, i've never tried it. i haven't had any luck with powdered detergent in my FLer at all.
interesting about the wet towel, does that cause the machine to use more water? i may just try ecos, then biokleen since i can get it locally, then dawn and go from there. the difference this time is that we are using all cotton diapers. with dd we had a lot of hemp and bamboo, i'm not sure if that makes a difference.

Oh yes, the towel tricks the weight sensor and I noticed a lot more water in there when I use it. Everything just ends up cleaner in the end, less stripping needed.

TIDE is used here.
Use Soapnuts as a booster in my diaper loads Use Bac Out in my cold rinse. Occassionally I strip with Dawn. If I have trouble with stinkies I either bleach or use vinegar. |

i have hard, iron filled water and ecos works pretty well for me. i sometimes use calgon but that's only due to the hard water. so, yeah, i would say ecos is fine.
cold wash with extra detergent, sometimes calgon. hot wash. cold wash. sniff test ;) |

I've been washing diapers for almost 5 years and we've always used country save. It has always worked well for us, so I see no reason to ever change :) The only additional thing I ever use is a little bleach, and I stick with only natural fibers.

My wash has depended on the age of the LO. My wash for DS is more complicated than the one i'm planning for the new one.
My planned newborn wash will be a cold wash then a hot wash with extra rinse. I'm planning on using Allen's and Calgon in my hot wash cycle. This worked just fine for us with DS as long as we used only natural fibers or pockets. We got rid of our FLer a couple years ago and went to an HE TLer but it's still been working for him and his bedwetting (though i add Bac Out to my initial cold wash now to handle his man pee). We used to have good luck using Purex too (either the scented or unscented versions worked). Purex is what we use on our regular laundry so it'll be my back-up detergent this time around. Powdered detergents do not work for us at all. Everything else i've tried for detergents caused us problems so i'm not even going to try them again at this point.

We use Rockin Green Classic Rock to wash. Love the smell and the great work it does! We have a top loader washer so it's easy to control the water settings.

I miss Vaska. I loved the smell and how soft it got the diapers. I only stopped using it because it couldn't handle DS's bedwetter pee. Maybe i'll order some to use with the new LO? I was thinking of getting it for their clothes anyhow.
