So a friend of mine recently told me she uses Listerine at her nursing home job to remove stubborn urine smell out of clothing and bed linens. Do you think this would work for diapers and would there cause any problems with diaper absorbency? I was thinking I would wash normally but then do a second quick wash with the Listerine. I don't know, what do you all think?
Update- Well I don't really think it helped. There was a faint smell of Listerine when I was done. I did rinse, wash with detergent, wash with Listerine, extra rinse. It is mostly my Tinkle Traps that have a funky smell after DS pees and I didn't really notice a change. Bummer, well back to the drawing board! Edited by mommyofmax - 17 Jul 2012 at 5:19pm |

I've used it when rinsing out my night diapers the next morning. It seemed to help with the strong urine smell. I rinsed the diaper out in water a few times to get most of the urine out then soaked in the sink with some watered down listerine in the sink for a while. Never tried puting it in the washer. Didn't effect the absorbency or cause any rashes on my guy.

How crazy! I would have never thought...
I think I'd probably was with listerine first, maybe in the first rinse? That way it gets all washed out good through the rest of the cycle. Or I'd do like groupp.

Interesting. I'd be tempted to give it a try instead of using bleach in my initial rinse cycle.

I would think you'd have to add quite a bit for a whole washer load. Let us know how much you end up adding. I'd probably due a pre-rinse then add it to your wash.
It works great when added to the bath basin when bathing some of our homeless patients. |

Bummer, Sorry it didn't help. For my night (toddlease) dipes lately I've been rinsing in the sink a few times really good to get the urine out then spraying a good amount of homemade enzyme cleaner on them (which, by the way, smells really sour-not sure if that is normal or not) then rinse again and hang dry. I haven't had any issues with ammonia but I still do a bleach wash every so often.
I've also tried peroxide, vinegar, and oxyclean in addition to listerine. I'm rinsing the pee out of them a lot better than I used too. Feels like I'm washing by hand the way I'm kneeding them in the water. I rinse wring out drain, new water rinse wring out drain x 3. then spray with the enzyme cleaner. I think the rinsing has helped more than anything else. Sure wouldn't do it if I had more than just night diapers. Good luck |
