I am going nuts trying to find sunscreen and all I keep finding to read about the subject talks about how unsafe they are.  I burn in about 20 minutes with out it and Ellie is likely the same.  I can't just not use any.  Someone please tell me to just calm down and disregard all the panicky internet hype about ingredients....  Or tell me which brand you use and why.

There was a thread about sunscreens just a bit ago if you look back/search.

I like this list/explanation.

http://safemama.com/cheatsheets/sunscreen/

I just bought the Purple Prairie one but haven't needed to use it yet.

I've been on a sunscreen quest this summer too.

Here's my take on it:  Safer sunscreens use physical blockers like Zinc oxide.  Best particle size seems to be "micronized" and "non-nano" = small enough to cover and do the job, but not so small that they can penetrate into your own body's skin cells.

Brands I've tried so far, all easily available in Canada (all at my local natural parenting shop, some at MEC or at Well.ca.  Well.ca has free shipping):

Badger:  Pro:  Waterproof and it works.  Con: super sticky, thick and chunky feeling.   Hard to rub in, and really leaves a white coat on the skin.     The Badger sunscreen stick is nice for faces.  Definitely looks white on though,  My kids love it - they call it their "sun paint"
Heiko:  Pro: Works.  Rubs in nicely.  Nicer feel than Badger.  Made in Canada.  Con: not waterproof AT ALL, rubs off on clothes, requres frequent re-application.  We'll be saving this one for the playground or work around the yard only.
ThinkBaby:  Pro:  Works.  Waterproof.  Rubs on nicely.  Non-whitening.  Con:  Pricey.  So far this one is my favourite.

My strategy has been to use the Badger on the kids for waterplay (I can see where I've missed!  And it's really the most waterproof) and the Thinkbaby on myself.   We'll use up the Heiko for dry activities.

I use the Environmental Working Group sunscreen ratings for information.

For the past 2 summers we've used Coppertone Kids Pure and Simple SPF 50.  It is rated well on EWG and it is something I can buy local and can afford.  Its a little harder to rub in than some others but I don't mind since it seems to work.  We got through a lot of sunscreen here so I need something that is fairly affordable.

I use Badger and it works really well. Yes it can be streaky sometimes, but I know where I have put it It works in and out of the water and we are all fair skin/blonds and it works great for us.

purple praire is awesome!! my friend uses it and we have borrowed hers, i love it. it's pretty pricey.

i use badger (from whole foods, get it on sale for $10/bottle), california baby (though the cost keeps going up and I will likely not buy more for $25/bottle!) and 3rd rock sunblock- they are not rated on EWG but are trying to get rated.. they claim to be the safest and most effective out there and i can say from experience it definitely protects from the sun. they claim to also be GOOD for your skin.. helps with sensitive skin, eczema, etc- this was from talking to the lady on the phone becuase dd has some eczema on the backs of her knees and i didn't want to irritate her. a little goes a looong way with that one too, especially in humid/moist weather.

I used, forget the exact name of it, the Neutrogeana baby stick. Why? because I actually do use it and it goes on easy. And i can toss one whereever easily (bag, glove compartment). It's not the best bang-for-the buck but it conveniently puts me over the free shipping threshold to support my (gasp) sposie pull-up habit mail order at diapers.com.

I haven't really scrutinized it, but it makes me look like I'm in a Kabuki opera, so it's that general class of sunscreen.

Why am I the only one I ever see with a white, white zinced up face?

did I already share Eve's confusion between zinc suncreen and bird crap? I think I did, but let me work that for all it's worth: she concluded white pasty stuff on the car must be sunscreen and started to do my face before I figured out what exactly she was up to.

We use the coppertone babies pure and simple spf 50.  Because it works well, is rated as safer than most normal sunscreens, isn't astronomically priced, and we need sunscreen.

Skin cancer does kill.  I haven't heard of anyone dieing from poisoning by sunscreen.  Hence I will use sunscreen.  I even use the spray on ones with all the chemicals if that is all that is available.  Because in my mind protecting our skin is important.

We have pretty fair skin so not using sunscreen is not an option.  I do sometimes not put it on if the kids are keeping hats on really well and we wear clothes that keep us more covered  than what some people wear in the summer to help us need less sunscreen.  It works well for us.

I haven't looked up the ratings, but nearly always use physical barrier: titanium or zinc oxide.  I have to confess I've been using some of the mist spray ones this year, though.  Can't beat how easy and good the coverage is, and I appreciate that w/ my 3 wigglers.

Katherine!!! That is hilarious and disgusting!

But did the bird doo work? Cause my car is a total drop zone lately and the badger stick is running low. Ew...

Christine we use the spray stuff too sometimes and did when we were on vacation and out on the boat.  It was the easiest to keep reapplying and we were out in the sun for 4 hours on the water and none of us burned!  First time that has ever happened!  I used the liquid on faces and the spray everywhere else.

I used tons of sunscreen growing up because my parents were sunscreen nazis (despite some bad burns I got anyway).  None of it was super natural or anything and I haven't had any ill effects from it.  Don't worry too much either way.

LOL Katherine!

I use badger on Ds and for my face , my mineral makeup has spf. I have a badger stick that I use for his face. I will use it on myself if we are out in the blazing sun for long periods but we NEVER get any stinkin' sun. It's rained or been cloudy almost every day this month :(

I noticed today at Baby Bargains Raw Elements sunscreen is on sale.  I've never used it so can't speak for it but thought I would share.  Its an SPF 30, Zinc Oxide based, and it has a 1 rating at EWG.

Personally I am more worried about the bad effectts from the sun than the sunscreen.  We are a family of super fair skin and red hair.  I have a little more of my mom's skin tone despite being red head and am okay for about 20/30 min but that is it.

Joseph is pale, pale, pale,  He gets pink and burns in less than 20 min.  Jordan takes after me a little bit more.

I use bulfrog quick gel SPF 50.  I have no idea if it is considered "safe" but it works and works well.  I tried one of the nautural ones and I broke out in a rash and haven't strayed since.   Since i started using it almost 15 years ago i have not burned (as long as I remember to put it on LOL!!)  not even the summer I was a camp councler outside all summer in the Nebraska sun.
