If you need to sweep daily, how do you do it? I mean, do you use a standard broom and dustpan, a swiffer, or do you have a fancy sweeping device?

I sweep the kitchen at least twice a day, if not after every meal. My kids are oinkers!! I use a typical broom and dust pan, stiffens never got the floor clean enough or picked up the big food chunks. I would love love love to get a robot vacuum but it's not high on the priority list right now ;)

Broom and dustpan. I would like a dustpan with a tall handle so I can stop having to kneel or bend all the time. These knees are screwed up from surgery and injuries and baby belly is getting bigger.

I sweep the dining room after every meal/snack, and the kitchen usually twice a day. Lately I sweep the entryways, living room, bedrooms, and bathroom once a day as well (show-ready).

Broom and dustpan daily, and occasionally a good vacuuming since we have hardwood floors and stuff gets in the cracks.

I have a dog so there's no food chunks...not much to sweep after a meal.   it's just hte general non-edible stuff that needs sweeping.  and dust.  k.  so I need to keep my broom not in the basement then. cause going to fetch it every day will get old I think.

I sweep every day just with a broom and dustpan. I never found swiffers to work very well for me either.

I sweep with my Flylady Rubba Sweepa. Love that thing. Occasionally I will use my swiffer vac but only if there's no chunks. After meals I usually just wipe under the kids' chairs with a wet rag since they're so messy.

Broom and dustpan here - SM, thanks for the idea for a long handled dust pan! I'm known to just pile it up in a corner late in pregnancy when I physically can't bend over to use it and DH doesn't think about it until it's really really bad - I would like to avoid that situation again and that would be a good option. Duh!

I only sweep the kitchen/dining room areas daily. We are a no-shoes household with no pets so it's not too terrible throughout the rest of the house. I have a vacuum that does pretty well on solid flooring so I just do that every couple of days and under furniture once a week (we have really nice wood grain/country plank linoleum type stuff so not much to worry about in the way of cracks). When we had a cat at the old house I had to vacuum every stinkin' day! Such a pain.

I tried a swiffer thinking it would be easier, but not so much. A pretty big waste of money.

so if you have multiple floors, do you have a broom/dustpan on each floor?  Like for bathrooms and stuff?  Our bathroom floors were small in our old house so it wasn't much effort to sweep w/ just a handbroom thingy.  our new master bath is one of those big ones now.  and it's a total hair magnet.

I have one in the basement and one upstairs. It would never fail I would take it down and forget to bring it back up, then I would be too lazy to go get it (there's a reason we built a ranch style home LOL). It was just easier to spend a few extra dollars on a second one to not have to deal with it Embarrassed.

I don't sweep the upstairs of my house, just vacuum it once a week (hardwood and all).  But if I were going to sweep my bathroom regularly I'd probably stash at least a small broom/dustpan set in a closet somewhere.  I like having cleaning supplies close to the area where I'll use them.

I used a dustpan and broom too.  I should probably do it daily, but it is more like 3x a week.  On the weekends though, I find the best thing for picking up fine dust off the hardwood is a microfiber towel.  We put the towel on the bottom of the swiffer sweeper handle - it has 4 rubber holes for sticking the towel in and it holds it quite well (I agree the swiffer was a total waste of money otherwise!).  It is amazing how much a microfiber towel will pick up right after you sweep.

I also use a wet microfiber towel and hand wash under the table every night.  I think our dogs are too well fed, they wont eat many fruit and veggies anymore and DS1 is in a very messy stage right now.

i've been trying to teach the kids to sweep LOL

we have a black lab, so dog hair gets everywhere and then his meds make him shed even more.  now that he's getting older he doesn't find the food on the floor as easily...i can't imagine what it will be like without a dog to clean up after the kids.

i got a long handle dust pan at wm for about $5 i think, it's a life saver.  i don't sweep nearly as often as i should, dh is really bad about tracking dirt into the house and not even trying to knock the dirt off the bottoms of his shoes, plus we live at the beach, so we have sand EVERYWHERE.  it's insane.  i vacuum about twice a week - bedrooms are carpeted, rest of the house is laminate flooring with rugs.  it's a big job and maybe i should split it up, but i hate hauling out the vacuum.

While I should sweep every day it usually only happens a couple times a week.  I have a swiffer sweeper vac.  Mine works great and gets up good size chunks.   A regular broom and dust pan doesn't work for me and drives me crazy.  Just pushed the dog hair all over the place.    Between the dog hair and other crumbs it works great.  If I am vacuuming the living room I will use the regular vac. on the kithchen floor too.

I have thought about using some extra MF inserts on my swiffer vac.

The regular swiffer doesn't work for me.

we have one regular long-handled broom that hangs on a hook in the cellarway.  i open the basement door and it's right there.  if it were in the basement? Forget it! :D  there is a small whisk broom/dustpan (IKEA) upstairs in the bathroom cabinet that i use for quick cleanups.

ita with linda about the microfiber towels on a swiffer.  our house is all hardwood and ceramic tile, except one super-small carpeted bedroom, and if i don't feel like mopping the mf/swiffer combo works really well to get all the dust.  also - mopping - i spray the wood floor with a vinegar/water mix and then swiffer it with either an old regular towel or a cheap mf towel on it.  works great.

I use a dirt devil stick vacuum downstairs on hard floors and a broom and dustpan lives in my upstairs bathroom. I use a Kirby on my carpets. We have two dogs and 5 children right now so yes I sweep every day!

I use a regular broom and then little broom dustpan set in the kitchen. If it's a busy day, I'll just keep sweeping things into the corner all day then actually only use the dustpan after dinner. It's not ideal, but I do what I can. ODS also sweeps into the same corner. He could never make a pile, but he can sweep into the corner decently. I keep my broom in the laundry room and dustpan/broom set under the kitchen sink. I vacuum our upstairs bath, but yeah I'd keep the broom up there if I swept it.

I sweep at least twice a day...way too preggo to bend for the dust pan.  I sweep up all the mess into a corner and have my kids suck it up with my dirt devil hand vac.  Even my 1 1/2 year vacs up the mess for me.  I would love to find a vacuum specifically for hard wood floors...rather vacuum mess up than sweep.

Whew! So glad I'm not the only "sweep into a corner" person! LOL I was terrified to admit it for fear that it would be looked at as totally gross and disgusting (although when PG it does sit far longer than I would like).

I might have to look into a broom vac type thing for those uncomfortable months... It's one of those things that I knew they existed, but never though to actually buy one for myself. Silly me!

The dirt devil one's awesome because it actually has sucking power...I've found other hand vacs to be pathetic....nope you're not the only one.  Hey even when I'm not pregnant I do the sweeping and the kids do the dust pan or vac.LOL  Now I just have to get them to sweep!

I totally need to buy brooms for each floor ... I have missing broom syndrome often here although the reason is mostly my 3 year old son using it for imaginary playErmm

Broom and dustpan here too. There are days when I sweep 6+ times a day. I only use the swiffer as a mop substitute, so I sweep then swiffer. Sometimes I'll vaccum the dinning room if I know it's just dry crumbs and I've got the vacuum out already.

I looooooove the shark floor sweeper.  As long as you have realistic expectations, it is an ingenious little gadget.  It has only a brush (no suction), so it is very quiet.  Still, it picks up surprisingly well.  Plus, it picks up damp (not soggy) food.  I've been happy w/ battery life--probably once or twice a week to charge.

Best of all, S looooves it.  His is the $20 model.  He uses it as often as possible, and cries when it is charging.  I ended up bending the handle by accident, and since it really isn't quite strong enough for my needs, I went ahead and bought the better model that is pricier, but has the edger--a must, and a stronger motor.

He used to run it w/ the handle clicked into the upright position, as he is doing here.  It now sports very cool construction stickers Big smile.

There are some cons.  It is not going to satisfy a clean freak.  It is particularly bad on edges and corners.  There is a small edge brush that pushes things better into the path, but it's not foolproof.  Still I think it's ideal for daily use, when you likely weren't going to have time to do a deep cleaning in the first place.  Also, they really aren't all that durable.  I usually get 1.5yrs out of them--sometimes due to rough handling, and sometimes due to random things like the switch breaking.

Man I miss my dog cleaning up the food Cry. I had a swiffer vac but it always lost power halfway through the kitchen. I wasn't a fan of the regualr swiffer either. I now have a broom with a long handled dustpan that the broom clips on to for storage that I like better than any of the swiffers. It's simple and easy. Once in a while I will vacume. Maybe once a month or less just to get behind the furniture in the kitchen (computer desk, office cabinets, water cooler, etc.) I ususally wipe with a wet rag after rice and pasta or leave it until the next day when it has dried and can be swept. I got the broom/dustpan combo at Ikea.

I just vacuum. My MIL actually asked me where my broom was the other day and I said "Um...... we only have one outside! Lol"  I use the dyson w/ the brushes off on all the floors and random rugs, then I do a quick once-over the big area rug w/ the brushes on. However, in the past w/ my crappy vac I use to vacuum, then sweep w/ a broom, then swiffer!!! before I could mop. I hate dusty grainy dirty hardwood!

Christine - I really want to get a basic Shark. I had one years ago and it was perfect for quick clean ups. I need to just get one I really dislike having to sweep and swiffers don't seem to do anything.
