What would they be? (Items like blocks, train sets, etc. count as 1 toy.)

I'm struggling with the kids' toys - what I see them play with, what I think they should play with, and what I wish would just disappear.

If it were up to me:

Wooden blocks
Wedgits
Train set
Dolls
Good quality dinosaurs/animals
Books (we have too many, so I am sorting through them and only keeping upstairs ones that are faves or have a good message - any others are getting boxed up and going downstairs)
Good quality cars, trucks, tractors
Balls
Play silks
Pop up tent
Bean bag chairs (do those count?)

I already have two big tubs ready to go and so much more junk to sort through. I really didn't think they had that much stuff - where the heck did it all come from?!?!

do dolls count as one?
dd's dolls
doll bed
ds's animals
M&D wood barn
kitchen/play food
puzzles
games- do they count as one?
easel/art stuff
blocks
squirt guns- they just love them!

this is assuming outside stuff- bikes/scooters/trampoline don't count. if they do, I would keep them over blocks and squirt guns. also assuming books don't count- i would never part with those.

Well crud, I forgot about games and puzzles. Hmmmm... maybe 10 was too small of a number? LOL I'd keep those over the pop up tent though. Lots of things I didn't think of! Tongue

LOL Renee! I know. they are worthwhile things! Chairs/bean bags don't count IMO. either do books- they arent really toys.

Ds has a bow and arrow thing that he LOVES and it gets used almost everyday, i know it would be missed. but this is a good thread because its making me really think about what would be missed and what I think is not needed. we seriously are over toyed here..

dd's little shopping cart and the doll stroller would also be missed! they like cars and trucks but not SO much, and we have some trains that never get used.

how about ten categories? that might be easier. and i agree, books and furniture don't count ;) and i am only counting indoor toys. excluding things like puzzles, art and "school" stuff.

1) play kitchen (probably keep forever since jared built it ;) with accessories including food, pots and pans, utensils, tea set dishes, napkins, pot holders, apron

2) dolls and accessories including clothes, diapers, feeding, carrier, strollers, cradle

3) schleich animals and cheap ole barn

4) mini trampoline

5) instruments

6) building blocks- including lego, mega blocks and future wooden blocks

7) basket of stuffies

8) anything homemade

9) one basket of quality baby toys

10) the basket of various cars/ transportation

ooh, i forgot about dress up. that is a major must have. i would get rid of the basket of stuffies in favor of dress up (including scarves as 'play silks' and dress up clothes, accessories, weapons/ tactical gear and shoes)

we should conduct an experiment.

narrow down all of the toys in the house to the ten things on our lists and see how it goes for two weeks. it might be kinda fun!

although, i excluded things like paper, coloring books, activity books, crayons, markers, pencils, paint, puzzles, magnetic dress up dolls, stringing alphabet, lacing shapes/ animals, games, playdough, stamp kits, beading kit, shape sorter, ball hammer thing, alphabet/ color blocks and all things school related.

i guess we would have to decide what would be included in the 'ten toy rule'

anybody else think this would be fun? or am i just nutso?

Hmmmmmm....

1. legos, the big ones not the little stab parents in the foot kind
2. wooden blocks
3. dolls
4. barn/animals
5. play kitchen
6. stackers (nesting boxes, cups, etc.)
7. fagus trucks
8. playsilks
9. train set
10. doll house

With the exception of the bins of random, seldom played with toys in the kids rooms and a small bin of baby rattles and things those are all of our toys. I guess I'm not counting bikes and soccer/base balls either. This list is just inside toys. I'm happy with the amount of toys we have. The only things I add would be a set of playstands and a doll cradle.

i'd be in, let me see if dh will help me narrow stuff down. I think we do need a list of "givens" my suggestions are:
art stuff
outside stuff (bikes, trampolines, whatever is kept outside for the kids)
play furniture- kids table/chairs, tent, bean bags
books

I know we wouldn't get rid of things, but maybe to put them away then rotate things out every season change or somthing.. like ds has a nice wooden castle but it's a space sucker and doesn't get used enough.. but we wouldn't sell it right yet..

good idea, Katie. i guess narrow it down to just "toys" and everything else is a given.

Great thread!  It really has me thinking too.  I agree I wouldn't count art supplies, CD's, games, books, or outside toys in the 10.  I'm a little stuck because there is SO much I can't get rid of because I need stuff for the daycare as well.  Its the biggest thing that drives me crazy about my job!

1. dolls (although we can afford to cut back on how many) and stroller and I'd keep a few pieces of clothing for them.
2. a few special and favorite stuffed animals (especially for DD2 who has some she can't live without)
3. schleich animals
4. play food and dishes
5. doll house
6. wooden blocks (even though they aren't used a ton I think they are so important)
7. instruments
8. dress up clothes (this is the most used item along with art supplies)
9. few of the nicer infant toys, rattles, wooden rings etc.
10. a few "toddler" toys- stuff for around that 1 -2 year stage that DD2 is out growing but DD3 will need

If my nesting instincts keep up I might be ambitious enough to actually pack stuff up for a while.

I think nesting is playing a role for me as well.

dd2 would be happy with nothing but her entire My Little Pony collection.  which is quite large.  there are very few current items she doesn't have.

We have this currently:

1. trains / wooden cars
2. silks, scarves, few dress up accessories
3. blocks / Lincoln logs
4. potato heads
5. cars
6. playmobil
7. lego/duplo
8. animals / dinos
9. Dolls / stuffies
10. tea set / kitchen type things

We don't have a set number of each category but they have to fit into their containers :)
This doesn't include small basket of baby toys.
DD also has a small container of the "extra" stuff that doesn't fit in(and I don't care for :P).  She can keep whatever she wants but container has to close.

I don't include books, puzzles, games or art supplies in toy count.  I try to rotate the available selection of these regularly.  Art supplies is weekly, books monthly, games are biweekly(ish) depending on interest.
