I've never mown a lawn before, yesterday was the first time. I'm so ridiculously proud of myself. But DH is never quite up for it and we can't really afford to hire someone anymore.
It's all weeds, but it looks great! We have a electric one, which is good I'm scared of liquid fuel and dislike the noise. I'd like to get a reel one, but am not sure how well it would work on our bumpy, weedy, sloped yard.
I did it after DH cleaned the house and cooked up dinner.

That's great, Katherine! I mowed a lawn for the first time when we bought our house 4ish years ago. I was really proud of myself, too
It is a great workout especially since our grass is thick and we have a hill. We bought a reel mower, but it isn't good for our kind of grass. I would have preferred that since I can't start our mower on my own.

I'm really confused at how an electric mower works. Do you charge a battery or is it plugged in somewhere?

A chargeable/cordless one would be awesome. No idea if they exist yet. (and if they do they must be pricey)

Where are the pictures!!!
I would like to mow, but DH takes such great pleasure in it, I would be afraid of taking away his favorite job. My parents had us mowing our lawn at home by the time we were middle school age. It was the norm in our area and I only had one friend who lost some toes...

Ouch, Linda! That sounds awful!
I lived on a golf course growing up so there was always lawncare. DH mowed lawns for his whole road, so he was amused at my excitement to mow our lawn. He usually does the mowing, though. He can do it in 1/4 of the time it takes me. He likes to jog and mow Edited by Clare_S - 23 Apr 2012 at 5:05pm |

We have a large lawn... And a ride on.... But I'm always so pleased when I do the grass. Iike the instant gratification- seeing what I've done. ODD is 14 and has been helping maybe 2 years now, and DH started training her with the weed whip last summer. If YDD weighed enough to keep the seat down while shifting she would be mowing too! Skinny minny can't do both though, so she still runs around moving toys and hoses etc. Congrats on the job well done!

Good job! I like to mow the lawn. I started doing it because I got tired of waiting for dh to get around to it and then kept doing it because I enjoyed it and it got done on a regular basis. Now we have no lawn and no lawn mower and it kind of makes me sad.

I love mowing the lawn. I've done it ever since high-school. With steel-toed safety boots every time! ![]() Cordless electric lawnmowers are available up here. We considered one, but the battery made it heavy, and it won't hold it's charge long enough to get our lawn done - we have a large-ish lot. No lawn mowing here yet this year. It's snowing today.... |

Congrats! You can definitely find rechargeable ones, but it depends on how big your lawn is and it does reduce the power of the mower. We had a push reel mower when we lived in the small cottage when Naomi was born, and I felt very cool for owning and using it. I must say though, we had a VERY small yard, but it still took a while to do with the push reel. You need to go over the whole thing 3-4 times to really get it well, although it's nice a quiet and good excercise. It's also much better for the grass than cutting the blades with a powered mower. We did have some bumps and inclines, and that was ok, but those parts you might need to do a little extra and from a few different angles. We got ours brand new from someone on Freecycle. Never hurts to ask, right?

We had a rechargeable one at a place we rented a few years back. It was great!
We now have a reel mower, which we love, though as others have mentioned you do have to cover each spot from a couple different directions, at least. And we have mostly weeds, lots of bumps and holes and hills as well. Lots of fun! |

lol.... we have a zero turn, and I love to mow the lawn. I don't get much chance, though... as DH loves to and now both older boys have learned how. We only mow approx. 4-5 acres with it. The rest is bush-hogged with the tractor, and I don't know how to use that. ![]() |

They do! Our reel mower finally bit the dust and I bought an electric cordless mower while hubby was away at NTC. It ended up costing about $100 more than the corded version. We have an electric weed eater that has a cord and it drives me crazy so I was more than willing to pay the extra! |
