I have a friend who has a TON of space and just got her first chicks 3 days before I did. I had suggested downsizing and she asked what breeds I wanted to get rid of so just today I went from 15 down to 11 chicks, and she went from 11 up to 15 chicks! LOL After MUCH research I'd rather be safe than sorry for at least the first year with our new coop and don't want to overcrowd them at all, so if it turns out we can have more than 11 (if they all live until adulthood, we'll see) in the coop I'll just get more girls next year. Now we have:
2 Rhode Island Red
2 Ameraucana/Easter Egger (sold to us as the former but I found out they're the latter Angry)
2 Welsummer
2 Black Australorp
3 Buff Orpington (including runty little Cupcake who might not make it)

I really like the mix of breeds and they all do well together so far. Happy with my choice to expand on the number of breeds in the flock but not the number of chickens Tongue

That's nice that you could swap.  How's the little one doing?

Sounds like a good plan. Always better to have too much room than too little!

Jess- Ccake is still looking and acting healthy, she's just not growing! The others are 2-3X bigger/heavier than her! I half expect her to just suddenly die, but then again she could just as easily surprise us and live until she's 10! Lol.

Well i'm glad to hear she's still with you.  She just might surprise us all yet.

11 eggs a day is still plenty!  Do you have any new pics?

How much did you pay for your Easter Egger?  Around here, actual Ameraucana's go for $20-$250, if you can even find them.  Mutts that lay blue eggs are more like $2-$5.  I would be majorly ticked off if I paid $20 for the real deal and didn't get it!!

Most "Ameraucana" are actually Easter Eggers.  True Ameraucana come from breeders.  I know mine are muts but i don't care.

My RIRs and Buff Orpingtonss were $5.99 each because they had Marek's vaccine and the Black Australorps, Easter Eggers (marked as "Americaunas" with that spelling), and Welsummers were $2.99 each.  I imagine with these 11 girls I'll get 8-10 eggs a day, which is great for our first batch!

That's plenty of eggs.  I am only getting the new chicks because other people keep asking me for eggs.  Otherwise we'd never be able to keep up.  Even with our current 8 hens and eating more eggs than we ever have i still have extras to sell to my in-laws.

Hmmm, you think maybe she has parasites?

We've had awful luck with hatchery quality buff orpingtons. One just dropped dead one day when it was about 6 months old. Our other 2, DH just culled this morning b/c they were both having so many issues - one was about half the size of our other chickens and definitely had some sort of anxiety disorder! Shocked
Sara - on a break, loving on my amazing blessings

That kinda makes me nervous.  I've got 4 Buff Orpingtons arriving this week.  Fingers crossed that maybe it's just the hatchery yours came from and not all the breed in general.

Honesty have no idea whats wrong with her, but she eats and drinks and plays like everyone else so I've stoppe obsessing about it. I started putting ACV and vitamin supplements in their water consistently and I think it's helping them all :)

Glad she's still doing well.  Maybe she's a midget?LOL  No idea if that's even possible for chickens but sure would be cute!
