I have a few skirt patterns to try, now I am ISO a couple dress ones. I have made a pillowcase type one before that turned out pretty well... what else should I try? I don't think I'm up for knit anything yet, just typical calico/quilters cotton. Mainly I just want some day to day dresses for playing around the house, but still nice enough to wear to town.

T-shirt dress - the ones where the shirt is the top and you sew fabric on the bottom to make the dress part? That would be a good option for around the house! Cute and comfy ![]() |

They are not free, but I am loving these patterns - they are easy and fast and simple too. No special notions - just some elastic. I don't care that DD plays in them or gets dirty because they were fun and easy to make but they also look really nice too.
If I get the fabric on sale it is around $8-10 for a dress, which I am good with for being a play dress too I have made some t-shirts into dresses and they work, but DD now like "pretty dresses" and she loves mixing and matching fabrics so it is fun to make them for her![]() Edited by Sarah2106 - 26 Mar 2012 at 10:43am |

She also has pillow case dresses (that style) and adds a ruffle to the bottom. I like that too. It "dresses" up the simple dress.

Yes yes! I have a few super cute free dress patterns saved. Some of the first things I sewed for dd so they are pretty easy.
http://bridgetbaxter.blogspot.com/2010/02/apron-top-tutorial.html I haven't made this one but it would be really cute as a dress if you just lengthen it a bit.
http://bridgetbaxter.blogspot.com/2008/04/happy-anniversary-to-you.html This one I did make for dd a few years ago. I think her bodice top pattern is pretty true to the state size. It is very simple to make and can be worn as a sun dress or a jumper and fits for a long time. Also easy to lengthen or shorten. I would just make the tie straps longer than she says to at first and then shorten them after measuring them against your dd because I wish I had a little more length on the straps on the dress I sewed.
I have another link to a baby dress that you could just enlarge the pattern of if you are interested.
I also have these links that are to make dresses from men's shirts that are easy. I have made both of them before and plan on making them again:
http://www.danamadeit.com/2008/07/tutorial-the-shirt-dress.html I didn't do the waist band on this one because I didn't like it on my version and the dress took me just a couple of hours. Just use an existing dress of your dd's to trace around for a general shape and length. Same for the next link as well.
http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=170402.0 I used a piece of lace at the bodice on this dress, not pleats and left the hem along and it was very cute that way and very simple. Honestly it took me an hour or an hour and a half. Edited by Nuttygirl - 26 Mar 2012 at 1:31pm |

Thanks for the link for the one using a button up shirt NG! We were given a couple shirts that were DH's uncles (who passed away a couple weeks ago) and one was way too big for him. I was trying to decide what to do with it... now I know! I saw on spin off that added a matching ruffle to the bottom (same fabric as the waist),
Edited b/c I'm a total dork and reposted one of the same links ![]() .Edited by moonangel12 - 26 Mar 2012 at 3:07pm |

Renee that link you put is the same one I have as my second button shirt on on my post. I do love it. I like it better in some ways than the one with sleeves but both are pretty versatile ideas.

For the dresses you actually get a pattern to cut out for the bodice and sleeves (you don't have to "wing it") and then it tells you the size of pieces to make the bottom of it. She also gives step by step. I like having a pattern and something in hand I can print. She also gives you how much material to purchase, so I had less waist. I got the 5/$25 and have not been disappointed in any of the patterns. There was a goof in one of them I noticed and she sent me a corrected one and a free pattern too ![]() |

I have drafted a few of my own patterns before so I don't have too much problem winging it but the apron dress tutorial actually provides a bodice pattern in two sizes to print and cut. I used the size 3/4 one and it fit my dd at 2 and would still fit fine now I would just have to lengthen the skirt part. But I would make the 6/7 one now so she has more room to grow.

i am very much a beginner when it comes to sewing. i am self taught and impatient
![]() i have made so many dresses from this pattern:
http://www.simplicity.com/p-2364-toddler-dresses.aspx
they have it in baby sizes and older girl sizes, too. i do snaps instead of buttons, but that's just because i'm afraid of button holes. it is super easy and the BEST thing about the dresses is that they become rompers/shirts when they are too small to wear as dresses. the first one dd had was a 12 month size and she continued to wear it as a top until very recently. she wears a 4T. the dresses can be for warm weather by themselves or cold weather with a shirt and leggings or pants underneath. i make them super plain with just one fabric, with a band of different fabric in the middle or the bottom, with ribbon sewn around the middle, etc. very easy to add appliques or embellishments. |

(
) the dresses I have been making( ) skirt I made from her pattern. I also made one for my niece for her 3rd birthday with scrap fabric( ) ruffle pantshummm I don't have a picture of the ruffle pillow case dress I made that was also super easy. I then used the ruffle pants to make the shorts (int he dress thread) I just tweaked them a bit and added elastic to make something more like "bloomers". I am also thinking about using the bodice from the dress pattern and then using a large single panel to make more of a tunic style instead of the layered ruffles. They are very adjustable!! |

Oh, OK! I saw that thread and thought the dresses were adorable! Is that the Olivia pattern? My tab somehow got closed but I think I had Olivia, Penelope, Madalyn, Zoe and Becky (one is a cute top, a skirt, and another is ruffle pants). I have the double ruffle dress picked out - is that the one you made?

Yes they are the Oliva pattern and I have made the Mia
I want to make the Penelope, but it is similar to the Mia (just 2 ruffles instead of 1) so I think I can figure that one out from the Mia pattern |

Emma Lee are the ruffle pants Patty Lee (capri length) are ones I got free when one of my other patterns had an error I caught. They are the ones I shortened to make bloomers not the ruffle pants (oops ) |

I am almost done with the one from the craftster site and it is really cute!! But as of now ODD has declared she doesn't like it and won't wear it
![]() . She told me to give it to Lily... I'm hoping i can convince her to wear it to church if DH wears his blue and white striped shirt that matches. I did pink accents so her crocs will match since she'll likely live in them this summer . I'm using the sleeves to make bloomers (hopefully). I just did wide straps instead of the flutter type sleeve since it was a little easier for my first one. It's taken me a while to get this one done, but a lot of the time has been spent making decisions on size, where to cut, what to add (accents), how to do different parts, etc.

Yeah, just add some pink on the dress and she would probably wear it. I do that with dd. But my dd is crazy too. I cut one of my old green cordouroy dresses down and sewed it back up for a jumper for her for Christmas. But she wouldn't wear it that Sunday. She said she hated green and didn't like it. Fast forward 2 weeks later and she likes dark green and would wear it.
The flutter sleeves were a little hard for me to hem the edge of because of the curve. I think if I make it again with a thicker shirt fabric I might just edge the sleeves in bias tape of a contrasting color (like pink!) so that I dont' have to worry about getting the curve to look right.

I did get her to try it on for me... the sides were way too big (I was making it last night after she was in bed. I knew they would be, but didn't realize it was quite so bad) so I took them in a bit on each side. Looking on the bright side, as she gets older I can let it back out for a shirt or something later on. The straps are a bit long also so I will probably take them up a little.
The back (before I took in the sides) - I'm hoping once I wash it the stitching will soften up so the top hem will lay a bit better. If not how can I fix it, or just leave it? ![]() Goofy girl (this is after taking in the sides. I took the pocket off of the front of the shirt (now the back of the dress), added the pink and sewed it back on). ![]() Close up - a bit wrinkled from being in a bag headed for Goodwill. Can I just say that sewing itty bitty stripes can make your head spin? Whew! ![]() |

It looks really cute. The one I made was blue and white pinstripes too and it doesn't photograph very well. It looks almost like it is shimmering or something.
I had to take mine in a bit too on the sides after I tried it on.
For the top I would try to steam iron it if you haven't already. That an sometimes fix some of the wonkiness.
