I used 2% milk to make mine. I just made another batch today (using the last of the last batch I made to make a new batch). It has been on the heating pad for 4 hours and has already firmed up, now I just can't forget to put it in the fridge in a few hours.

When I make mine I like to use the cooler method which you can find here on this very informative site.

I tried it again last night, and woke up to creamy yogurt this morning! It doesn't taste tart to me...it doesn't taste like anything really. I am relieved. I don't care for plain yogurt store-bought), but this seems like a perfect, plain base. Yay! I used whole milk this time, but I want to try 2% next time.

I let mine sit for 8 hours on a heating pad on low.
Holly - glad you got yours to work this time. I find that mine doesn't really taste like anything and I also don't like plain yogurt from the store. I love to stir in home made strawberry jam - YuMM |

Mine probably sat closer to 12 hours in the crockpot. I didn't time too well for the whole going to bed part, so it was already sitting for a couple of hours before I went to bed. It felt a little too long, but it tastes fine, and we haven't had any problems.
I was thinking some strawberry jam would be really tasty! I wish I could say homemade, but I just have Trader Joe's.

Glad it worked for you Holly! Mine often sits 12 hours or more, the longer the better actually, it gives the beneficial bacteria more time to grow.
I need to make some more tonight...

I got mine made too! I did mine like Sarah, 8 hours on a heating pad. I also added 1 tsp of vanilla. I mixed it with some stawberry jelly too. Wow really good. I wonder how many calories I have consumed between that and the amish break I made.

So glad to find this thread! My husband and I spend a small fortune on yogurt. I knew that it was pretty easy to make from scratch, but the trick was just keeping it at a fairly consistent temperature. This will be my next foray into home ec!

Second attempt worked last night. I mixed in my starter really well and incubated in the oven with the light on, perfect yogurt this morning! I used organic whole milk this time, not sure if I'll use the same procedure with the raw milk the next time, or if I'll try it at a lower temp. Just glad to have been successful. I ended up straining the whey off my first batch and made some yummy yogurt cheese. it was awesome on toast this morning, like tangy cream cheese.
