We have the worst time with out kitchen cloth smelling funky and mildewed.  We absolutely can not put it anywhere wet, we have to hang it to dry before putting it in the hamper, and even then it gets a funk.  I have tried Tide, Bleach, Baking soda, vinegar, and borax to get the smell out - the only thing that has worked at all was a really strong boiling water + borax soak.

My friend, on the other hand, stores all of her dirty, wet kitchen cloth under her sink and goes days without washing, and never has a problem! Shocked

Could it be my water that makes my towels so funky??  I don't understand it, my mother never has trouble with hers, nor does MIL, unless the weather is super humid.

Have you been using Tide on them all along? Back when I used Tide I had the worst time with my towels & kitchen cloth getting smelly...it was horrible. then I switched to Crunchy Clean, and then my homemade detergent and no more smells. I think it is the borax or maybe the oxy clean? Maybe try an oxygen cleaner soak?

I've gone through half a dozen detergents since we've lived here.  Tide, All, Purex, RubyMoon. Extra. O-Nature-L.  Geek

Hmmm...well, then I don't know! We did have hard water at our other house, too, so maybe that was causing the smell too. Who knows???

I grew up with crazy hard water.  Never really had a problem with smells.  BUT, we did need quite a bit more detergent than before the hard water.

Ugh, that's a tough one, more detergent.  I have a FL high-efficiency washer, and I get nervous about too  much detergent..  But maybe I"m not using enough???

I'd say it's the hard water, since we've had the same experience, but never before when we had softer water. I periodically just soak my washcloths (they are the ones that get the funk, or that smell bad after just a couple uses) in borax or oxyclean for a few hours in the hottest water possible and that helps for a while.

I have the exact same problem and I have regular water (city).  I have started and stopped kitchen cloth 3 times, since after a week or two they all start to stink like wet dog or something.  It gets pretty gross, so we end up back with paper towel Confused

I do use Tide Free on clothing and towels...so I wonder if that is my issue??  I also have a front loader so I am sure lack of water in the machine does not help my cause Cry

I think I might try some of the suggestions in this post (borax and OxiClean soaks)....

We kept forgetting to buy salt for our water softener, so our water was very hard for a bit.  I definitely noticed more smells with laundry during that time period.  I also noticed occasional rust spots on some articles of laundry, perhaps from the hard minerals, maybe iron in the water.  I don't know for sure.  Everything got better when we filled the water softener.
