    Posted: 23 Oct 2009 at 5:32pm
Hello!  I'm Kristin and I have a lot of questions!

I am new to cloth diapering - really, I'm new to parenting - our little one is supposed to arrive in a few weeks.  We were given a whole set (18 of each size S, M, and L) of Fuzzibunz including inserts and doublers.  Do you think 18 of each is enough?

I was considering buying some prefolds and covers for when the baby is younger because I hear that we will go through a lot of diapers.

Also, we need to buy a wetbag to carry dirty diapers in the diaper bag - do you have any recommendations as to which is the best?  I have been looking at some online and they can be a little pricey.  I would really like a waterproof bag I can just throw in the wash with the diapers, but I also would like to keep it relatively inexpensive.

Lastly, we plan to use cloth wipes - I have made about 60 of them out of various materials - double layered flannel, flannel/jersey two sided, some thicker terry cloth ones - so I can see which I like best.  At the advice of our future pediatrician, we are going to start with just water on the cloth wipes.  I have read that you can make your own wipes solution, but most recipes I find contain some sort of essential oil and I wouldn't want to wash wipes with oil on them along with the diapers.  Does anyone have a recipe for a oil-free wipes solution?  I've seen recipes with glycerin in them to help moisturize baby's skin.  Does glycerin have the same effect of cloth diapers as oils?

Clearly, I need a little guidance.  Any advice you have would be appreciated :)

I would suggest getting some prefolds as you will need more in the beginning and they are nice to use/maintain IMO.
For wipes solution we have used the FB solution (2 c. distilled water, 2 TBSP baby soap, 2 TBSP baby oil, and 5 drops of TTO) for 22 months and love it. The oils have never been an issue in our laundry.  If you want oil free though I bet you could just use the water and the soap.

Gosh!  A whole set of FuzziBuns is one heck of a nice gift!

I really like my Bummis tote bag for a wet bag.  I have two so I have one to use when the other is in the wash.  I also LOVE my shower sprayer.  I don't think I would have stuck with cloth if I don't have it.  As for a wash solution, I just bring a small squirt bottle of water and a small ziplock of dry wipes.  Boring, but it works.

Thanks for all your advice.  We were super excited to get the Fuzzibunz - they are used, but in great condition.

I think I will just stick with water for our wipes as many people seem to do fine with just that and I'm definetly ordering some prefolds and a few covers to have some backup.  Of course if I really get in a bind, using one or two sposies wont kill me.

Thanks!

My favorite Wet Bag is Whammies.  They come in cute prints and have a tab on the inside to put a few drops of essential oils to help with stink.  Good luck with the little one and CDing!  Sounds like you have gotten good advice and are headed in the right direction.Embarrassed

We use this wipe solution and haven't had a problem in the laundry.

2 tbsp baby oil (or canola oil or olive oil), 2 tbsp baby soap, 2 tbsp baby lotion, with 2.5 cups water.  I sometimes add one drop of tea tree oil, but don't do it all the time.

Right now I'm using olive oil because I have it and it's cheaper than baby oil and better on the skin (i find).  My sister is a massage theripist and she uses canola oil on all her clients because it is "suppose" to affect the least amount of people (least irritating).

Just my 2 cents,  I do know a lot of people use just water on wipes but I found that the little bit of oils you use help the wipe glide across the baby's skin.  Water for us seems to kind of stick. For my solution, i don't measure but it's about 2 cups of water, a small squirt of baby soap. just a capful of baby oil and a drop or 2 of tea tree oil.  This has never caused any laundrt issues.

I really like monkey foot wet bags.  They do cost a little more but you will know why when you feel them.  They are made very well and are thick.

My second reccomendation for wet bags are leslie's boutique.  They aren't as thick but they also cost a little less.

Both these brands can be washed and dried.  And you are going to be using them everyday...so that always helps me justify the purchase.  But I am kind of a sucker for a cool printed wet bag....

I really like Planet Wise Wetbags. The small size is good for wipes and the medium size is good for dirty dipes on the go. For my wipe soluntion I fill a tupperware container with water, put in a squirt of baby oil and a squirt of babywash and shake it up. Then I dip the wipes in it, ring them out a little and put them in the wipe warmer. I also use a combo of prefolds and fitteds with my newborn. She goes to the bathroom before and after each feeding and eats about 10 times a day. With 18 you'll probaby need to do laundry every day. They recommend 2-3 dozen newborn dipes if you would like to do laundry only every other day (just from my experience, laundry was definately NOT a high priority my first week home--I was far too tired and sore!). Congrats on your little one!

We use 1-1.5 TBSP olive oil, 1-1.5 TBSP babywash, and 1 cup water for our wash.

We have two wetbags and two XL hanging pails from Sarah's Stitches and LOVE them.  She is a great WAHM who has very reasonably priced items, and if you don't see exactly what you are looking for, you can email her and she will work with you (her shop is temporarily closed to new orders, but she has a link to her in-stock items).

Good luck! Smile
