It seems like the past few years, and especially the last year or two, we are constantly sick. We seem to get a family cold about once a month, if not more often. Does anyone have any idea if we are really getting colds and just need to wash our hands more or if it could be something else, like mold in the house.

I'll admit the kids need to wash their hands more and when they are upstairs in the In-laws part of the house they are allowed to pull out any dishes or utensils and use them as toys. It drives me up the wall and I think it's gross. Maybe this is my opportunity to put a stop to it Wink

I'm going to guess some irritant or allergen, like mold or dust, that is making the passages more sensitive to begin with.  I say that because we don't have the best hygiene and (knock on wood), the DSs hardly get sick at all.  I'm not saying we never wash hands, but just that I'm a bit forgetful at times, and D is fast about eating his leftovers off the floor before I can get to them.

Any way you could take supplements to boost everyone's immune system?  Maybe some vit. C, and as soon as a runny nose starts, some zinc?  IDK what's safe for LOs, but those two, especially the zinc, really helped me a lot when I was a college student and beginning teacher (and exposed to lots of bugs).
Hope you get a bunch of responses here, because I'd love to know what other mamas think.

PSA: if you go w/zinc get the lozenges, not the nasal spray -- the manufacturer won't pull it off the market but apparently there have been loss of smell incidences -- some govt agency issued a warning about it a few months ago (presume it was the FDA).

hope you figure it out. did the colds coincide at all w/moving in w/your ILs?

How awful about the zinc spray!  I just took the supplements, which is why IDK how it would work for LOs.

Yeah, it seems to have gotten worse since we moved in with my in-laws. DH and I take echinacea and the kids take elderberry syrup and we all take vitamin C. I haven't looked taking zinc except in Airborne.

i hate wallpaper.  i say this because it's how i found mold in our house.  i wanted it down as soon as we married and i moved into the house.  upon pulling it down in the kids  bathroom, we found black mold that went out to 5 walls, two bathrooms, our bedroom, laundry room and closet.  we had an over haul, new bathroom, pulled down drywall, new carpet, etc.  thank the Lord we had a mold clause in our homeowners ins!  mold hides in dark areas.  look in closets, under sinks, etc.  if that's it, it can be deadly.  we have a severe asthmatic and i truly believe it made her worse.  it was sooooo awefull!  so sorry mama.

Debbie- that is horrible! I cannot even imagine. Beth- aren't there home "mold" tests on the market these days? I swear I just saw one at Lowes. I'd check and see if that was it. Also, I recently saw something about inferior drywall being used in new houses that has caused some major health issues for people. Is your inlaws house new-ish?

Maybe you should get your vitamin D levels checked.  I hear it is not unusal to be deficient in Vit D and that it predisposes you to recurrent illness, which seem to get much worse come Sept and on when shorter daylengths and more clothing dramatically decrease the amount of vit D we are getting through our skin from the sun.

We were the same way and supplemental Vit C and paper bathroom cups made a huge difference.  The next big helper was disinfecting common surfaces 2-3 times a week with a disinfecting wipe.  I normally use Lysol or Clorox wipes, but have used a homemade spray of 30 drops GSE to 8 oz of distilled water.

I thought of one more thing today, Beth - do you have/use a dishwasher?  I don't even use the sterilize option, but I always feel the water gets a whole lot hotter and things get a lot cleaner than if I do the dishes/silverware by hand.
And, if you have a more recent model, it's probably more energy and water efficient than by doing it by hand.

When you moved in with your in-laws, was it a local move, or are you in a different part of the country now?  I know I was sick a lot when I lived in Arizona -- that seems backwards, but I'm more allergic to desert plants than everything that grows east of the Mississippi.  And I know a family that recently relocated due to mold allergies -- their home wasn't infested, but the area they lived in had high mold counts.

Not that any of that makes your symptoms go away, but I hope you can figure out what you're dealing with!  I know it's no fun being sick all the time.

I lived in a moldy dorm room, and I had horrible allergies from it. But a key sign for me is that I had HORRIBLE headaches.

If you think it's mold, I'd get it checked out. It's nasty stuff. My father was a commercial builder and re-did a dorm building. The abatement of the mold was just as toxic as if they were doing asbestos abatement.

We had similar issues when we moved where we are now - and something that helped was getting a water filter for our kitchen tap.  We're not sick nearly as much!
