Ok, I tried to post this last wk, but I did it right before the old forums shut down, and didn't have a chance to get much feedback.  Dh is putting together a cd for Grace and Phin of songs we all like.  Here's what he has so far

Blackbird—The Beatles

Piggies—The Beatles

Obla-Di, Obla-Da—The Beatles

Train In Vain—The Clash

The Card Cheat—The Clash

The Man Comes Around—Johnny Cash

A Man Can Be A Drunk (But A Drunk Can’t Be A Man)—George Jones

It’s The End of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)—REM

The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth—Clap Your Hands Say Yeah

Birdhouse In Your Soul—They Might Be Giants

I’ll Fly Away—Gillian Welch

I Want To Sing That Rock And Roll—Gillian Welch

No One Knows My Name—Gillian Welch

Any other thoughts?  Dan Zanes, Raffi, and Laurie Berkner are great, but we want other alternatives to cool kiddy music.
Thanks!!

Otis Redding

Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay
Brown Eyed Girl
Under the Boardwalk

Almost anything by "Trout Fishing In America"  Though I don't know if that counts because most of their lyrics are kid-type songs, but they're musically very cool and I like listening to their songs.  Other adults must like it too considering when they play in town here they typically play at a local mexican bar & grill style place (ie. not just for kids).

Harry Belafonte is great too.

I'll add more as I think of them...
Jeff, DH to MommyTsa, Student and SAHD to Aaron. Expecting dd#1.

Mack the knife... there are a bazillion different versions... There are several we like

That's amore by Luis Prima because it is the only Italian I know...

The Sweetest Thing by U2

I really like our Peter, Paul, and Mary songs around the campfire... Adult and kid songs alike.

I'll come back if I think of more...

Grace LOVES Brown Eyed Girl, we forgot that one.  That's Amore is a cute idea too, we'll have to give some U2 a try as well.  This is actually a lot of fun, I'm going to love listening to this cd.

Three Little Birds-Bob Marley

Not Fade Away-the Grateful Dead version (chanting, clapping, what could be more fun!)

Stand-REM (teaches left and right)

I will try to think of more...

the Goo Goo Dolls' cover of "Give a Little Bit" (originally by Supertramp)

"Shake It Up" by the Cars

"Drive My Car" by the Beatles (he especially likes the "beep-beep, beep-beep, yeah!")

ETA: "Straighten Up and Fly Right" by Natalie Cole

My boys are into Neil Young, Jack Johnson, Cake, Dave Matthews, and Michael Franti at the moment.  We do kiddie music, too, but it gets a bit old day in and day out.

These are my kid's "adult" favorites:

Anything They might be giants (the Ant song especially- which is actually on one of their "adult" albums)

Beck (although you have to watch for language)

Old Micheal Jackson ("Don't stop till you get enough" "shake your body down to the ground")

Paul Simon "diamond on the soles of her shoes" and others.

My one year old LOVES "dream a little dream of me" by the mama's and the papa's.

They also love the Polyphonic Spree and the Flaming lips.

Elvis and Beetles are also a hit.

I think "It's Oh So Quiet" by Bjork would be a good one :).  Or Human behavior.  My kid's don't like her new one.

Oh, and we LOVE LOVE LOVE Jack Johnson here :).

I didn't read all of the responses, so sorry is someone mentioned this, but dd loves Santana and has since she was itty bitty. A greatest hits album. She also likes America (more my dad's tastes than mine, but it's a hit with her).

You should hear him sing "I got a woman" by Ray Charles.  It is the cutest thing EVER!
