CD'ing for 1.5 years - i love it! but i have been having some problems.

background:
- combination of OS, PF and fitteds
- top loader (very old, but works)
- switching between tide and charlie's (can't seem to find the right fit)
- i have quite hard water

problems:
1) stinkiness! i've read a number of other posts on this; they back up my experience. i think not rinsing well enough, plus bacteria build-up have caused this. so i tend to rinse A LOT. i switched from the charlie's back to the tide and did extra washes and rinses. this helped with the stink, but i still have some STINKY after an overnight diaper (12 hours), even in the PF and fitted.

2)has my over-rinsing caused this problem? the MOST frustrating thing of all - the PUL on all my OS is totally shot! 12 diapers, less than a year old are completely useless. (yes, sometimes it makes me want to cry.)

i'm sure this is all related to washing / detergent / rinsing.

please help...?

have you tried a touch of bleach in the wash? I know that 'they' say you shouldn't, but you only need 1/4 C at the most to kill the nasties in your diapers maybe once a month or so. That is honestly what fixed our problems on top of switching to Tide exclusively for diaper laundry because it seemed to work the best for us, and we have fairly hard water as well.

i don't know what to say about the PUL on your OS AIO?? I would contact the company and see if it was possibly a bad batch if they are still fairly new.

I have had the same issue with the PUL on quite a few of my diaps as well. I figure it was due to drying them in the dryer, so i started to hang dry anything with PUL. Sorry to hear about you losing your diapers i know how you feel.Hug

i forgot to edit (3 kids LOL) that if you bleach, put it in the hot wash. bleach in the cold prerinse will kill some, but the hot water will help break up the buildup so the bleach can do its job with the trapped bacterias.

thanks! i have tried bleach before and it helps (with the stink).

i guess i'm just concerned that any of these measures i've taken in the past are causing the PUL problem. i actually had BG AIO's last year that had the same problem - after about 8-10 months the PUL failed. but because they were BG, i could get them replaced. so the next time, i bought OS because i can separate the covers from the stuffing...

so i did NOT put the covers in the dryer and they still had the same problem!!!

this is why i think it has to do with how i'm washing them.

The PUL is made to last. Sounds like a manufacturing issue, especially if they haven't been in the dryer. All of them too... shame. I'm sorry mama. If they are less than a year old maybe you can contact the maker and get replacements?

I agree with Taycia about giving bleach a shot.  It can be a real life saver.  It's been recommended to me to use it in cold water though, and i've found it works better for us that way, versus in hot water.

Also i'd pick a detergent and stick with it.  Charlie's works great for many people, but it's finicky.  You have to use it exclusively on every load of laundry, and even when doing that it will spend itself on removing the Tide residue and not on washing your diapers, for as long as 10 washes.  So the switching could actually be your cause of the stinkies.  I'd stick with the Tide.

good advice - thank you so much.

so, it sounds like things like bleach and extra rinses are NOT the cause of my PUL fail??? since no one else has it? since i had it happen twice, on two different brands of diapers and on the second set they did not go in the dryer... i'm assuming it has to do with how i'm washing them.

thanks everyone!    appreciate it!

I though PUL had to go in the dryer from time to time to re-seal????
