Behind the Diapers - Green Acre Designs

Shannon Story
Green Acre Designs

What advice does Green Acre Designs' Shannon Story have for new WAHMs? Find the thing you are good at and love. Shannon found her perfect fit in Green Acre Designs. When she started to sew her own diapers, her first attempts did not look great but they worked. Soon, friends started asking for her diapers and encouraging her to start a business. Now she has established a great product line and store, but has not forgotten the most important business advice - always put your family first.

Are you married? What is your husband's name? How did you meet him? Was it love at first sight?
Yes, I'm married. His name is Robert and we met through a friend. It was love at first sight (I was 16) and I remember the first time I saw him. *Sigh*, my sister was actually with me and saw the look and knew also, lol.

How many children do you have and what are their ages? Please tell us something about each child.
I have 2 kids; they are 2 and 4 and crazy little munchkin men. Kevin, the 4 year old, is good at finding trouble and being so sweet he usually gets out of it. Andrew is my very gentle-hearted kiddo, but he is 2 and has developed quite the little attitude lately. I'm sure he will go back to his normal self soon.

What is a rewarding experience you've had as a mommy?
My most rewarding experience was getting to "catch" Andrew when he was born. It was such an amazing feeling to be the first person to hold his little body.

What did you think you'd be when you grew up?
I really wanted to be a Wildlife Biologist.

Who did your classmates think you were in high school? Would your classmates be surprised by who you are now?
The shy girl who did gymnastics and dance. Then I broke out of my shell a little at about 16, but I still didn't like high school.

I actually asked a high school friend this and she said no because I was pretty crafty back then. But I don't think she would have guessed it was cloth diapers I would be making.

What was your most embarrasing moment?
It would have to be when I was in the 7th grade and I was doing a flip-flop (Back Hand Spring) in a School Pep Rally and my shirt flipped up in front of the whole school. I wasn't wearing a bra so I flashed everyone. I didn't need to wear a bra because I was so flat-chested. But MAN! I wish I was wearing one that day!

Who were you before Green Acre Designs, any interesting jobs or schooling?
Before I started my biz, I did a few things. Went to college, and worked for a grocery store as a checker. Then went into banking for a few years - that was probably one of my favorite jobs besides what I'm doing now. Got married, we moved away from my hometown and I got a job working for a corporate gym. Then I taught gymnastics until I got pregnant.

How did you get started cloth diapering and sewing your own diapers?
I got started with cloth diapering just because my husband and I talked about it, and decided it was what we wanted to do. We never even talked about breastfeeding, because I guess it was just a given that I would. :o) I started sewing my own diapers, because I didn't realize what was out there on the internet. But then I found all these wonderful cloth diapers after realizing the resources available on the net, and they were mostly out of my price range. But by the time I found the ready-made diapers, I was already going in the direction of making my own. They were pretty bad at first, but they worked and that is all it takes to get you hooked to make something that works and looks cute.

What inspired you to create your business? Did you run into any obstacles in starting it?
Friends who saw what I was making for my baby wanted me to make diapers for them, and thought it would be a good idea for me to sell them. So I did! I am very lucky that I didn't have any real obstacles, besides the obvious - not enough time or sleep.

How did you come up with the name Green Acre Designs?
My maiden name is Greene and so it is a take off of that. Also, my idea was that cloth diapering helps keep our Acres Clean.

If you could do any kind of work you wanted, other than the business you now have, what would you be doing?
I really can't think of something I would rather be doing. Nothing would fit like this does.

What are your dreams for the future?
More products, better availability, and for lots of retailers to carry my products would be business dreams. My main dream is to stay happy and in love and keep my family happy and healthy.

If you have time for hobbies, or outside interests, what are they?
I love reading and doing outdoor activities, and I would love to learn to quilt someday.

Who, living or dead, real or fictional, would you like to have lunch with and what would you discuss?
My Grandma probably, I miss her.

What's your favorite product from another WAHM/WAHD?
My very favorite product from another WAHM are jewelry made by my dear friend. She calls it Caterpillar Jewelry...;they are necklaces and bracelets made with beautiful glass beads and semi-precious stones crocheted into a necklace.

What is your favorite book?
The Red Tent (A must read for any mama).

What is one of your guilty pleasures?
Chocolate.

What's something that no one would ever guess about you?
That I really DO eat a lot of chocolate. lol.

Anything else you think would be fun for others to know about you?
I had part of my hair dyed pink last Monday. And I love it!

Do you have any advice for a WAHM just starting out (or someone who is considering becoming a WAHM)?
Find the wholesale sources and don't be afraid to buy in bulk. Get samples if you are buying in bulk. Keep your receipts; Even better get started with a bookkeeping program early and stay up on it, so taxes at the end of the year don't make you want to throw in the towel. Put your family first and try not to stay up all night working; I'm a much better mommy when I get enough sleep. Don't undervalue your product; you should get paid for your time and effort. Do something that your good at and you love; it makes doing the same thing day after day much easier.
